A surprising number of itineraries we plan end up with one extra day late in the booking — a flight that got rebooked one day later, a meeting that cancelled, a partner who could not join for the first leg. The question I get most often is "where should I spend the bonus day?". The answer is almost always "where you already are, deeper". But specifics matter. Here is a practical map of where the extra day pays off and where it does not, organised by which leg of your trip you are adding it to.
Extra day in Gangtok
- **Best option — Tsomgo Lake + Baba Mandir day trip** (if not already done). 7-8 hour round trip from Gangtok with the convoy system. Books out fast; arrange a day ahead. Adds the highest-altitude visual experience of the East Sikkim circuit.
- **Strong alternative — Rumtek + Lingdum + Saramsa Garden day** (8 hours including drives). Cultural depth — Rumtek's Karmapa monastery and Lingdum Zurmang monastery side by side, then the botanical garden for a quieter afternoon.
- **Slower option — full MG Marg slow day + Banjhakri Falls + cable car** (5 hours). Best for travellers tired after high-altitude days. Banjhakri is a waterfall-and-park complex with a cultural display; combined with the cable car (Deorali-Tashi View Point ride) and a long evening on MG Marg, this fills a relaxed bonus day.
- **Specialist option — Hanuman Tok + Ganesh Tok + Lord Buddha Tashi viewpoint loop** (4-5 hours). Three viewpoints in a loop, ideal if your weather is uncertain.
Extra day in Pelling
- **Best option — Yuksom day trip** (90 minutes each way, 6-7 hour total). Sikkim's first capital, the start of the Goecha La trek, Khecheopalri Lake on the way back. Yuksom alone deserves its own deep day if you can.
- **Strong alternative — Tashiding monastery + Sangacholing combo** (5-6 hours). Two of the most spiritually significant monasteries in West Sikkim. Tashiding is the holy ground; Sangacholing is the older quieter spot above Pelling.
- **Slower option — Pemayangtse deep visit + Pelling viewpoints + Rabdentse ruins** (4-5 hours). Stay in Pelling, walk to the old capital ruins, slow afternoon at the viewpoints.
- **Lateral option — Pelling to Soreng + Hee Bermiok day trip** (7-8 hours). Cardamom plantation walks, bhatti visits if October. Returns to Pelling overnight.
Extra day on the North Sikkim leg
- **Best option — extra night in Lachen** to do Gurudongmar and Chopta Valley as separate days rather than rushed in one. Acclimatisation is better; photos at both are better; AMS risk drops.
- **Strong alternative — extra night in Lachung** with Yumesamdong (Zero Point at 4,724 m) on a separate day from Yumthang. Currently Zero Point is sometimes restricted; check with operator the day before.
- **Slower option — overnight in Mangan or Phodong** on the return drive from North Sikkim. Phodong monastery, Labrang gompa, the slower lower-altitude rhythm.
- **Avoid** — using the bonus day to push to Thangu or Gnathang Valley as a same-day add. The roads and altitude make this exhausting and the photos do not justify it without a proper overnight.
Extra day in Darjeeling
- **Best option — day trip to Glenburn Tea Estate** for a proper estate tour with lunch (10 a.m. departure, 5 p.m. return). The single best tea-estate experience in the Darjeeling area.
- **Strong alternative — Kalimpong day trip** (3 hours each way, full day). Crosses to a different valley feel. Deolo Hill, Durpin Monastery, Cactus Nursery.
- **Slower option — slow day in Darjeeling** (see the slow-day guide). Cafes, bookshops, Tibetan refugee centre, sunset at Observatory Hill. The bonus day used for slow exploration.
- **Specialist option — Mirik day trip** (75 minutes each way). Lake-and-tea-garden experience, less commercial than Darjeeling. Quieter homestays for an overnight if you turn the day trip into an overnight.
Extra day in Kalimpong
- **Best option — day trip to Lava and Lolegaon** (2 hours each way). Sub-alpine forest, viewpoint, the famous canopy walk at Lolegaon. Roughly 8 hours total.
- **Strong alternative — Rishop and Charkhole** as a deep-overnight option turning the bonus day into an overnight (1.5 hours from Kalimpong). Quieter, higher-altitude views.
- **Slower option — Pedong + Cross Hills (Damsang Fort area) day trip**. Mid-elevation cultural-historical add-on.
- **Lateral option — drop to Reshikhola + Aritar** for the river-valley overnight if you have a couple of nights extra.
When the bonus day is better unspent or banked
- If you have not yet built a buffer day for monsoon (June-September) — make the bonus day your buffer instead of pre-allocating it. If the trip runs smoothly, the buffer becomes your slow day; if a landslide hits, you do not have to reshuffle.
- If the bonus day is on the last day of the trip — better used in transit (an unhurried return drive with a lunch stop at Singtam or Rangpo) than crammed into a final destination.
- If you are travelling with seniors or young children — they often benefit more from a half-day rest in the existing hotel than a new add-on. Watch their energy.
