What Lachen is really like
Lachen is a small Tibetan-style village at 2,750 metres in North Sikkim, and its entire existence in the tourist world is justified by one thing: Gurudongmar Lake. At 5,430 metres, Gurudongmar is one of the world's highest freshwater lakes, sacred to Buddhists and Sikhs alike, and named after Guru Padmasambhava who blessed it over a thousand years ago. You drive there from Lachen — past the Thangu Valley at 3,600m, past the bleak plateau at 4,500m, up through hairpin bends with the Himalayan range appearing and disappearing in cloud — and then the lake materialises in a bowl of rock and snow. It is large, still, and at that altitude the silence has a physical presence. The rest of Lachen — the village, the monastery, the warm guesthouses run by Lachenpa families — is the infrastructure around this experience. It is genuinely remote: no roads other than the one you came in on, limited connectivity, permits required at multiple checkpoints. The cold at night is real. But Gurudongmar is one of those places people return from changed, and we've been taking guests there since 2012.
Why travellers love Lachen
Gurudongmar — one of the world's highest lakes
At 5,430m, Gurudongmar is a lake at an altitude where most people feel every breath. Sacred to both Buddhists (blessed by Guru Rinpoche) and Sikhs (Guru Nanak is said to have visited), a small section reportedly never freezes. The drive from Lachen (85 km, 4 hours) is part of the experience — the road to the lake is one of the most dramatic drives in India.
Pristine North Sikkim wilderness
North Sikkim is protected more than any other part of Sikkim — restricted permits, limited tourists, no mass development. The landscape on the Gurudongmar road (Thangu Valley, Chopta plateau, the high-altitude desert above 4,500m) is raw Himalayan territory that most of India never sees.
Traditional Lachenpa community
Lachen village has been self-governed by the Lachenpa community under a traditional headman (Pipön) system for centuries. The people are Tibetan-Sikkimese Buddhists with their own customs, festivals and dialect. Staying here is a genuine cultural immersion, not a performance for tourists.
Gateway to the Zemu Glacier trek
The Green Lake trek from Lachen follows the Zemu Nala into the Zemu Glacier cirque beneath Kanchenjunga's north face — the same route early European Everest pioneers used. A 7–9 day serious trek for those with the fitness and permits.

6 experiences our travellers ask for again and again
How long should you spend in Lachen?
Most North Sikkim tours do 2 nights in Lachen (for Gurudongmar) plus 1–2 nights in Lachung (for Yumthang + Zero Point). The standard package is 5–6 nights North Sikkim total from Gangtok and back. Lachen alone warrants 2 nights minimum — one night to acclimatise, one night after the Gurudongmar day trip.
Arrive from Gangtok (Day 1 afternoon), Gurudongmar Lake day trip leaving 4–5 AM (Day 2), departure to Lachung or Gangtok (Day 3).
Arrive (Day 1), rest/acclimatise + Lachen village and monastery (Day 2), Gurudongmar day trip (Day 3), departure (Day 4). Strongly recommended for anyone over 50 or with any cardiac/respiratory concerns.
Full trekking itinerary from Lachen to Green Lake (4,200m) beneath Kanchenjunga's north face via the Zemu Glacier valley. Requires special trekking permit, guide, cook and porter. Only for experienced trekkers.
Getting to Lachen
Bagdogra Airport (IXB)
205 kmNearest airport for North Sikkim. Fly Bagdogra, transfer to Gangtok (3–4 hours, 120 km), stay one night in Gangtok, then drive to Lachen (120 km, 5–6 hours). All North Sikkim tours require advance permit processing — book with an operator at least 5–7 days before arrival for permit paperwork.
New Jalpaiguri (NJP)
195 kmSame routing as Bagdogra. NJP to Gangtok is 3–4 hours. North Sikkim permits (Inner Line Permit + Protected Area Permit) are arranged through your tour operator — they require your passport/Aadhaar and passport photos submitted in advance. Don't try to arrange permits on arrival.
Driving in
NH10 from the plainsFrom Gangtok: 120 km to Lachen, 5–6 hours by shared jeep or private vehicle. Route: Gangtok → Chungthang (80 km) → Lachen (40 km more). The road from Chungthang to Lachen is narrow and follows the Lachen Chu gorge — magnificent but slow. Landslips during monsoon (July–September) can close sections. Only North Sikkim-permitted vehicles can proceed past Chungthang checkpoint.
Lachen itself is tiny — you can walk the entire village in 20 minutes. All excursions (Gurudongmar, Thangu, Chopta) require your permit vehicle. The Gurudongmar trip departs Lachen at 4–5 AM and returns by 2–3 PM — your driver arranges everything. No local taxis or shared transport exist.
Hotels in Lachen
Lachen has 15–20 guesthouses, almost all run by Lachenpa families. They are simple, warm and excellent value. Don't expect hotel amenities — generator power, squat toilets in some, limited hot water. The trade is waking up at 2,750m with the Himalayan dawn coming through your window. Electricity supply is limited after 10 PM. Book in advance for May–June and September–October peak season.
Most Lachen accommodation falls here. Clean rooms, blankets provided (bring a sleeping bag liner for extra warmth), attached or shared bathrooms, basic Indian/Tibetan meals. The family-run guesthouses are almost universally honest and hospitable — we've sent hundreds of guests to them and have had only positive reports.
A small number of better-equipped properties with attached bathrooms, better heating and slightly more consistent hot water. The price difference is modest; the comfort difference matters at altitude on a cold morning before a 4 AM departure.
Almost all Lachen visits happen within a North Sikkim package tour (mandatory for permit reasons). The accommodation is typically pre-arranged by the tour operator as part of the package at no additional cost. We pre-select guesthouses based on cleanliness and warm food quality — both matter enormously the night before a 5,430m excursion.
Where to eat in Lachen
Lachen is not a restaurant town — you eat at your guesthouse. Most properties offer breakfast, a packed lunch for the Gurudongmar trip and dinner. The food is straightforward, good, and exactly what you need at altitude. There is one small tea shop near the monastery that does Maggi noodles and tea.
- Snow Lion Retreat KitchenIncluded in package or ₹200–400 per meal
Best kitchen in Lachen. Excellent thukpa, soft tingmo, and a pork belly with chilli that is genuinely good. The butter tea here is properly made — not the watery imitation served in tourist restaurants at lower altitude.
- Tashi Delek Guesthouse Dining RoomIncluded in package or ₹150–300 per meal
Reliable, filling, honest. The thali-style dinner (rice, dal, achar, a vegetable and usually some pork or chicken) hits hard after a cold day at altitude. Portions are generous.
- Tea Shop near Lachen Monastery₹30 – ₹100
One small shop selling Maggi noodles, biscuits, chips, tea and warm drinks. Open erratically. Good for a quick warm-up while visiting the monastery, and for buying chocolate and energy bars before the Gurudongmar departure.
Shopping in Lachen
There is almost no shopping in Lachen, and that is appropriate — it is a remote mountain village, not a market town. One or two small shops near the monastery sell prayer flags, incense and basic supplies.
Monastery Shop
Prayer flags, butter lamps, incense, small bronze statues and basic Buddhist items. The monastery occasionally sells hand-woven items made by local women.
General Stores (2 shops)
Packaged snacks, energy bars, instant noodles, bottled water, basic medicines (diamox is sometimes available — bring your own to be safe), warm socks, gloves. Stock up in Gangtok rather than relying on Lachen shops.
When to visit Lachen
The Gurudongmar road is controlled by the Army and completely closed from late November to April due to snow. The two open windows are May–June (spring flowers, clear skies) and September–October (post-monsoon clarity). These are the only practical months to visit Lachen.
Best window for most visitors. The Chopta Valley is carpeted with wildflowers in late May–June. Gurudongmar is clear and the drive is spectacular. Temperatures at the lake: 5–12°C daytime, -3 to -8°C overnight. Book 3–4 weeks ahead.
Post-monsoon. The air is crystal clear and the views are at their best. Slightly colder than May–June (lake daytime -2 to 8°C, nights down to -12°C). Fewer flowers but better visibility. October is our preferred month for photography-focused groups.
The road to Gurudongmar may still be open in early November but conditions are unpredictable. Temperatures can drop to -15°C at the lake. Not recommended unless you have high-altitude experience and the Army has confirmed road access.
Monsoon. The road to Gurudongmar is technically open but landslips are frequent on the Chungthang–Lachen stretch and on the Gurudongmar approach. Army may close sections without notice. Only consider if the road is confirmed open by your operator.
Gurudongmar road officially closed by Army due to heavy snowfall above 4,000m. Lachen village is accessible but there is nothing to do — the entire reason to come is Gurudongmar. Do not plan a visit during this window.
The Lachenpa people are warm, hardy and proud. They have managed their village under the Pipön headman system for centuries — a form of local governance that predates any Indian administrative structure. The food in Lachen guesthouses is simple and sustaining: thukpa (Tibetan noodle soup), tingmo (steamed bread), pork with bamboo shoots, and butter tea. Butter tea (po cha) is an acquired taste — salted, made with yak butter and brick tea — but at altitude in the cold, it works. Gundruk soup (fermented leafy greens) is another Sikkimese staple that appears on most menus. The local chang (millet beer) is milder than the lowland version but at altitude everything has more effect. Drink plenty of water, eat lightly the evening before Gurudongmar, and sleep in the warmest clothes you have.
