A Sikkim-Darjeeling honeymoon sits between two clichés that most couples are trying to avoid — the generic beach-resort experience and the over-crowded mainstream hill station. We have planned honeymoons in this region since 2012 and the formula that works has stayed consistent: Glenburn tea estate for the tea-and-privacy opening, Pelling for Kanchenjunga sunsets, optional North Sikkim for the adventurous, skip Darjeeling town crowds, dinner-by-fireplace evenings rather than buffet halls. The trip below is the version we recommend to newly engaged friends, refined across ~80 honeymoon bookings.
Why this region works for honeymoons
Three reasons we keep coming back to. First, the hotels that matter for romance — Glenburn, Mayfair Spa, Norbu Ghang in Pelling — are far enough from cities that you actually get the quiet you came for. Second, Kanchenjunga views are visible from a private bed in October-November, which is the photograph most honeymoons frame and hang on a wall. Third, the cuisine is dramatically more interesting than mainstream Indian honeymoon destinations — Bhutia cuisine in Sikkim, tea-estate breakfasts in Darjeeling, momos and thukpa anywhere. Couples who have done Goa or Maldives before tend to call this the "actual cultural" honeymoon.
The 7-night honeymoon shape
- Day 1 — Bagdogra → Glenburn Tea Estate (1 hour). Late afternoon arrival, pre-dawn tea-picking next morning. 2 nights at Glenburn — the most romantic property in the region
- Day 3 — Glenburn → Pelling (4 hours via Teesta). Norbu Ghang or The Elgin Mount Pandim. Sunset at Sangacholing Monastery — 30-minute walk from town, almost private at 5 p.m. in October-November
- Day 4 — Pelling: Pemayangtse Monastery, Pelling Skywalk, Khecheopalri Lake morning. Evening: in-room dining at hotel
- Day 5 — Drive Pelling → Gangtok (4 hours). Mayfair Spa Resort. Spa treatment in the afternoon. Evening at the resort with Kanchenjunga view
- Day 6 — Optional Tsomgo Lake day trip (skip if you prefer the spa) OR Rumtek Monastery at 6 a.m. + lazy day on MG Marg
- Day 7 — Gangtok → Lachung if going North (5 hours) for adventurous couples, OR a slower Gangtok day
- Day 8 — Drive Gangtok → Bagdogra (4.5 hours). Departure
Why Glenburn first
Glenburn Tea Estate is a 1,600-acre working tea garden 35 km from Darjeeling town. The Burra Bungalow and Water Lily Bungalow together hold 8 rooms total — small, exclusive, family-run. The experience is genuinely tea-immersive: pre-dawn picking with the head plucker, factory walk during processing, private bungalow breakfasts on the verandah, three-course candle-lit dinners. ₹18,000-28,000 per night double-occupancy, all meals and activities included. For honeymoons we book the Water Lily River House if available — it sits below the main bungalow at the river bend with the most privacy.
Pelling and the Sangacholing sunset
Pelling is the Kanchenjunga viewpoint town of West Sikkim. Upper Pelling sits at 2,150 m with the mountain dominating the western horizon. The romantic move: walk 30 minutes from town to Sangacholing Monastery (1697, oldest Nyingma monastery in Sikkim) at 4:30 p.m. in October-November. The monastery sits on a forested ridge above town. By 5:00 p.m. the late light catches Kanchenjunga; by 5:30 it turns pink. By 6 p.m. the prayer-flag courtyard is in shadow and you walk back to town with the temperature dropping. We book Norbu Ghang Resort for honeymooners — best Kanchenjunga-facing rooms in Pelling.
Gangtok at Mayfair Spa
Mayfair Spa Resort on Lower Ridge Road, Gangtok — the only proper luxury resort in the city. The spa wing is the differentiator: couple's massage rooms with private steam, hot stone treatments, Ayurvedic packages. ₹22,000-32,000 per night. Even at peak May rates the room with Kanchenjunga view (request north-facing #501-#510) is worth the upgrade. The hotel's in-house restaurant is the best mid-range dining in Gangtok — the Bhutia thali at lunch is the local meal we send guests to.
Best time for a Sikkim-Darjeeling honeymoon
November is our top pick for honeymoons. October crowds have left, Kanchenjunga views are at peak reliability (80 per cent clear-morning probability), hotel rates drop 20-30 per cent below October, and the weather is genuinely romantic (cold mornings, sunlit afternoons, fireplace evenings). Late March is the secondary window — warming weather, first rhododendrons, less crowded than April-May. Avoid May (peak crowds, peak prices), monsoon (June-September — rain and unreliable views), and the December 22-January 3 window (Christmas-New Year crowds at Mayfair and Glenburn).
What to skip on a honeymoon
- Darjeeling town itself — over-touristed, crowds at every attraction, the Mall in May is genuinely uncomfortable. Stay at Glenburn or another tea-estate property instead
- Tsomgo Lake on weekends — same as any other Sikkim itinerary, but worse for couples wanting solitude. Skip if you have only one day for it; weekdays only if you must
- Gurudongmar at 5,430 m — only if you specifically want it and are fit. Altitude is genuinely hard; one in eight couples has one partner who feels altitude symptoms badly enough to remember the day as the worst of the trip. Skip unless you both want it
- Tiger Hill sunrise — wakes you at 3:30 a.m., is heavily touristed, 60 per cent clear-view rate in honeymoon season. Skip if you are at Glenburn (better view from the bungalow verandah without leaving bed) or just press snooze
- Buffet meals — most mid-range hotels have a buffet system. Always order from the à la carte menu instead. The buffet is for tour groups
Sikkim-Darjeeling honeymoon cost
- Standard 7-night honeymoon (Glenburn + Pelling + Mayfair): ₹1,15,000 to ₹1,55,000 per person
- Comfortable mid-range version (Mayfair Darjeeling instead of Glenburn): ₹78,000 to ₹1,05,000 per person
- Premium 10-night including North Sikkim: ₹1,55,000 to ₹2,10,000 per person
- November shoulder saves 25-30 per cent on top-tier hotels
- Honeymoon discounts: Glenburn typically does a 10-15 per cent honeymoon rate if booked direct or through us; Mayfair offers a complimentary spa session for honeymooners with proof of recent marriage
