Sikkim trip from Delhi: flight, train, road options and which is actually fastest

Delhi to Sikkim by flight is 2.5 hours to Bagdogra + 4.5 hours by road = 7 hours total door-to-door. By train it is 20-22 hours overnight to NJP + 4.5 hours road. By road only it is 30+ hours of continuous driving. Here are the route options ranked honestly.

A Sikkim trip from Delhi has three viable routes — by flight via Bagdogra (fastest, 7-8 hours door to door), by overnight train to New Jalpaiguri (most economical, 25-27 hours total), and by road (which we honestly discourage at 30+ hours of continuous mountain driving). For most Delhi travellers the flight is the right answer. The train route works for travellers who specifically enjoy the rail experience or are watching budget carefully. This is the route-by-route breakdown with current costs, booking windows and the trade-offs we see at the office.

Flight via Bagdogra — the standard choice

Delhi (DEL) to Bagdogra (IXB) is 1,310 km, 2.5 hours flight time. Multiple daily departures: IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, Vistara and Akasa Air all operate the route. Best timing: morning departures (07:00-08:30 from Delhi) arrive Bagdogra around 10:00-11:00 a.m., giving you the full afternoon to reach Gangtok. Return: aim for 13:00-15:00 departures from Bagdogra so you can leave Gangtok at 9 a.m. and have buffer for road delays.

  • Typical one-way fare: ₹4,500-9,000 economy, ₹12,000-22,000 business
  • Booking window: 4-8 weeks ahead for best fares; 2-3 weeks for typical fares; 1 week for last-minute (expensive)
  • Layover risk: most Delhi-Bagdogra flights are direct; occasional one-stop via Kolkata. Direct is preferred
  • Bagdogra airport transit: 15-20 minute walk from arrival to taxi pre-paid counter. We book the taxi to Gangtok in advance for you (₹4,200-5,200 fixed-rate)
  • Total door-to-door (Delhi home → Gangtok hotel): 7-8 hours

Train via New Jalpaiguri — the value choice

Delhi to NJP is 1,440 km by rail. The flagship options:

  • New Delhi Rajdhani Express (12423) — departs NDLS 16:55, arrives NJP 13:35 next day. 20h 40m. 2A: ₹3,800-4,500. 1A: ₹5,800-6,500
  • Sealdah Rajdhani via Howrah (12313) — departs ANVT 16:25, arrives NJP 14:25 next day. 22 hours. Cheaper option
  • Brahmaputra Mail (15658) — overnight, slower (28 hours), Sleeper class ₹780, 3A ₹2,100. For budget travellers
  • Booking window: Tatkal opens at 10 a.m. one day before departure. General booking 120 days ahead
  • NJP to Gangtok: 4.5 hours road. Private taxi ₹3,800-4,800 or shared sumo ₹450-550 per seat
  • Total: 25-27 hours Delhi home → Gangtok hotel

Road from Delhi — only if you have time and reason

Delhi to Gangtok by road is 1,562 km, 30-36 hours of continuous driving. Route: Delhi → Lucknow → Patna → Siliguri → Gangtok (NH-2 then NH-31 then NH-10). Realistically this is a 3-4 day drive with overnight stops in Lucknow, Varanasi/Patna, and Siliguri. We do not recommend it as a way to "get to" Sikkim — fly or train. But if you are doing a longer Northeast or Himalayan road trip and Sikkim is a leg, it works.

Cost comparison for two travellers

  • Flight (round-trip, two adults, economy): ₹18,000-36,000 for the air segment, plus ₹8,400-10,400 for Bagdogra-Gangtok-Bagdogra taxi = ₹26,400-46,400
  • Train (Rajdhani 2A round-trip, two adults): ₹15,200-18,000 for rail, plus ₹7,600-9,600 for NJP-Gangtok-NJP taxi = ₹22,800-27,600
  • Train (Sleeper round-trip, two adults): ₹3,120 for rail, plus ₹7,600-9,600 taxi = ₹10,700-12,700. Cheapest option
  • Road (self-drive, two adults including fuel + 3 hotel nights each way): ₹38,000-58,000 total. Most expensive and most exhausting

When to book — by season

October trip from Delhi: flight 8-10 weeks ahead, Rajdhani 4-6 weeks (Tatkal often fills in minutes for October dates). May trip: flight 10-12 weeks ahead, Rajdhani Tatkal essential. November/March shoulder months: 4-6 weeks works for both modes. Winter (December-February): 2-3 weeks usually sufficient. Monsoon (July-August): bookable 1-2 weeks ahead but flights are sometimes delayed; build a buffer day into the itinerary.

Practical tips for Delhi travellers

  • Bagdogra airport has limited food options post-security; eat before boarding from Delhi
  • Carry a printed copy of your Sikkim hotel booking — useful at Rangpo check-post
  • Indians do not need a permit for Sikkim entry — passport, Aadhaar (NOT for Nepal trips), Voter ID or driving licence all work
  • NJP railway station Cloak Room: useful if you arrive at 1:30 p.m. and your taxi pickup is at 3 p.m.
  • Bagdogra airport has SBI ATM and a tourism information desk. Take cash for the road journey — UPI works at most stops but not all
  • Both flight and train routes need an Indian ID. If you are a foreign national flying from Delhi, your passport is required at Bagdogra arrival

Common questions

Frequently asked

Questions we get all the time

Flight to Bagdogra (2.5 hours) + road to Gangtok (4.5 hours) = 7-8 hours total door-to-door. This is the fastest practical option. The Pakyong airport in Sikkim is closer to Gangtok but has only a few flights weekly and is regularly cancelled due to weather. Bagdogra is more reliable.
