Bagdogra (airport code IXB) is the gateway airport for Sikkim, Darjeeling, Bhutan and eastern Nepal travel. It is small by Indian airport standards — one runway, one terminal, basic facilities — but reliably busy with daily direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Guwahati and Bhutan (Paro). 90 per cent of guests we receive in Sikkim come through Bagdogra. This is the practical guide every first-time traveller wants but few competitors actually publish: arrival flow, pre-paid taxi counter location, hotel options for overnight transit, food in and around the airport, and what to do when monsoon fog delays your evening flight.
Arrival at Bagdogra — the first 30 minutes
Single-terminal arrivals. Walk from aircraft to terminal is short (5-7 minutes on the tarmac). Baggage claim opens 8-15 minutes after gate arrival; usually 2-3 carousels operate simultaneously. Exit on the ground floor leads to a covered taxi pickup area. The pre-paid taxi counter sits 50 metres straight out from the exit — clearly marked. SBI ATM on the right side of the exit hall. Mobile signal works at the airport on all major Indian networks (Jio, Airtel, Vi). Pre-paid SIM card vendors are inside the terminal at the duty-free section (foreigners need passport + photo).
Pre-paid taxi counter — the standard way out
The Bagdogra pre-paid taxi counter is your safest option for non-pre-arranged guests. Fixed-rate fares (no negotiation), printed receipt, vehicle registration number recorded, in-airport accountability if something goes wrong. Current rates (subject to seasonal adjustment):
- Bagdogra → Gangtok (Innova): ₹4,200-5,200 fixed-rate. 4.5 hours drive
- Bagdogra → Pelling (Innova): ₹5,800-6,800. 5.5 hours via Singla
- Bagdogra → Darjeeling (Innova): ₹3,800-4,800. 3 hours
- Bagdogra → Kalimpong (Innova): ₹3,200-4,200. 2.5 hours
- Bagdogra → Siliguri (sedan): ₹950-1,400. 30 minutes (useful for overnight transit)
- Bagdogra → NJP railway station (sedan): ₹650-950. 20 minutes
Departures — security and what to expect
Bagdogra is a small airport. Check-in counters operate from 90 minutes before flight time; most airlines close 45 minutes before. Security check is generally fast (10-15 minute queue except during the 9-11 a.m. peak rush). The departures hall after security has 4 gates total. Limited food and shopping in the after-security area: a Cafe Coffee Day, a basic restaurant, a Plaza Premium Lounge (₹1,500-1,900 entry for pay-per-use). Power outlets are limited; charge your devices before security.
Hotels near Bagdogra for overnight transit
If your inbound flight arrives late evening or your outbound is early morning, an overnight stay near the airport saves significant stress.
- Mainak Tourist Lodge — closest to the airport (3 km), West Bengal Tourism property. ₹2,400-3,200 per night. Basic but clean
- Hotel Sinclairs Siliguri — 12 km from airport, mid-range business hotel. ₹4,500-6,500 per night. Reliable for early-morning departures
- Cygnett Park Asia Siliguri — 14 km, ₹3,800-5,200, modern
- Vinayak Hotel Bagdogra — 2 km from airport, ₹1,800-2,800, budget
- For longer-than-overnight stays, drive 30 minutes to Siliguri proper (Mayfair Siliguri, Hyatt Regency) for better hotel options
Food at and around Bagdogra
Inside the terminal: Cafe Coffee Day for coffee + sandwiches (₹250-450), a basic Indian-cuisine restaurant for thali (₹350-550), the Plaza Premium Lounge for buffet meals (included with lounge entry). Outside the terminal: 5-minute walk to roadside dhabas serving Bengali rice-and-fish and basic Indian fare (₹150-300). For better food, drive 25-30 minutes to Siliguri — Khana Khazana, Sartaj Restaurant and the Sinclairs in-house restaurant are reliable mid-priced options.
Connectivity and practical notes
- Wi-Fi at the airport is free but the speed is variable (good in the morning, slower in evening rush)
- SBI ATM at arrivals; cash is recommended for the road journey though most stops accept UPI now
- Bagdogra to Sikkim entry: you cross at Rangpo (Inner Line check, 15 minutes). Indians need any government photo ID; foreigners need the RAP processed at the post itself
- Drive in monsoon: NH-10 between Sevoke and Rangpo has occasional landslides. Border Roads Organisation clears within hours but plan a buffer
- Foreign passport-holders arriving at Bagdogra are sometimes asked to show their hotel booking confirmation at the airport exit — keep a printout ready
A note on Pakyong (PYG) — Sikkim's own airport
Pakyong airport sits at 1,400 m on a mountain ridge 33 km from Gangtok. Sikkim's only commercial airport. It is closer to Gangtok than Bagdogra (90-minute drive vs 4.5 hours) but only a handful of flights operate weekly and the runway crosswind limits cause regular cancellations. Currently SpiceJet runs a daily Kolkata-Pakyong service and IndiGo runs Delhi-Pakyong four days a week. About 25-30 per cent of weeks see at least one cancellation in monsoon; 10 per cent in winter. Useful for guests with flexible dates who specifically want the shorter drive. Not recommended as the only return-leg option for a tight itinerary — if the flight is cancelled, you drive 4 hours to Bagdogra.
