A Darjeeling + Kalimpong itinerary works because the two hill stations complement each other rather than duplicate. Darjeeling at 2,042 metres is famous for Tiger Hill, the Toy Train and the tea estates. Kalimpong at 1,250 metres is quieter — known for its monasteries (Durpin, Tharpa Choling), the cactus nurseries that supply orchids across India, and the Teesta valley views. They sit 51 km apart by road, about 2.5 hours of driving. Five nights covers both comfortably, with the option to add Lava-Lolegaon as a third stop for guests who want the slowest possible pace.

Days 1-3 — Darjeeling
Standard Darjeeling 2-night version. Day 1 arrival and Chowrasta evening; Day 2 the famous-name day (Tiger Hill, Toy Train, Happy Valley); Day 3 the museum-and-monasteries day (HMI, Zoo, Japanese Peace Pagoda). Stay at Mayfair Darjeeling (premium) or Dekeling (mid-range). For tea-focused honeymoon style, swap two of the three Darjeeling nights for Glenburn Tea Estate — see our separate Darjeeling itinerary post for the variations.
Day 4 — the drive to Kalimpong
Drive Darjeeling → Kalimpong is 51 km, 2.5 hours via Ghoom and Teesta Bazar. The road descends from Darjeeling at 2,042 m to the Teesta crossing at 200 m, then climbs back up to Kalimpong at 1,250 m. The Coronation Bridge over the Teesta (1937) is the photographed midway point — stop for a tea break. Lunch can be at Tindharia (small dhabas) or you can push through to Kalimpong by 2 p.m.
Kalimpong sights
Durpin Monastery (Zang Dhok Palri Phodang) is the most-photographed monastery in Kalimpong — built 1976, three-storey, with the most ornate prayer-hall murals in the region. Walking distance from Durpin Dara viewpoint which has the panoramic Teesta valley view. Tharpa Choling Monastery (also called Tirpai) is the older Gelugpa monastery, founded 1922, less touristed and quieter. The cactus nurseries (Pineview, Sericulture, others) are the agricultural specialty Kalimpong is known for — they supply orchids and cacti across India. ₹50-100 entry, allow 30 minutes each. Crawford Market is the working bazaar; Dr Graham's Homes is the 100-year-old Scottish mission school on the hill above town.
Optional Lava-Lolegaon day trip
Lava is a small village 33 km / 2 hours from Kalimpong at 2,100 m, the entry to the Neora Valley National Park. Lolegaon is 24 km further on the same road, at 1,675 m, with the famous Canopy Walk (a 180-foot suspended walkway through the pine forest). Combined as a single day trip from Kalimpong. ₹4,000-5,500 vehicle hire. Best in October-November and March-April. Adds a full day to the trip — only worth it if your interests run to forest walks rather than viewpoint photography.

When to go
October and November for clear Kanchenjunga views from both Darjeeling and Kalimpong Durpin Dara. March and April for cooler weather and the first flush tea harvest in Darjeeling. May is crowded and expensive (Indian school holidays); avoid unless you have no choice. June-September is monsoon — Kalimpong is more reliable than Darjeeling in monsoon because the lower altitude means less fog, but both work for monsoon photographers. December-February is sunny and cold with the clearest Kanchenjunga views of the year.
