About Cochrane Place
Cochrane Place is a 1920s colonial bungalow that has been meticulously restored and now operates as a boutique heritage hotel and day-visitor café. The original dark wood floors, open fireplaces, period photographs of the Raj-era Darjeeling district and the wide veranda facing the tea gardens and valley are all intact. For visitors not staying the night, the property is open for afternoon tea and estate walks — a welcome alternative to the standard hotel tea lounge. The tea served is from the surrounding Cochrane estate rows visible from the veranda. Sitting in a 100-year-old cane chair with a first-flush Darjeeling and the valley below is one of the better things to do in Kurseong.
Why go to Cochrane Place
Perfectly restored 1920s colonial tea bungalow
One of the very few Raj-era hill bungalows open to day visitors. The interiors are original — not a hotel renovation but a careful preservation. The estate veranda and the tea garden views make it the most atmospheric afternoon tea stop in Kurseong.
Estate rows visible from the veranda — tea you can see being grown
The Cochrane estate tea rows run directly below the bungalow terrace. The first-flush Darjeeling you drink at afternoon tea is from the fields you are looking at — a directness of origin that no town café can replicate.
How to reach Cochrane Place from Kurseong
Short taxi from Kurseong town centre (5 min, ₹150) — take the upper road above Kurseong station toward Cochrane. Any Kurseong driver knows the property.
Best time to visit Cochrane Place
Year-round — the bungalow and afternoon tea are worthwhile in any weather. October–November and February–March give the clearest valley views from the veranda. Monsoon visits (June–September) are pleasant inside the bungalow — the Raj-era interior is most atmospheric on a rainy day, ideally with the fireplace lit.
Time of dayAfternoon (2–5pm) for afternoon tea service.
