Kalimpong is the quieter, lower-altitude cousin of Darjeeling — 1,250 metres, 51 km south-east of Darjeeling, 70 km south of Gangtok. Smaller (population ~50,000), gentler, less commercialised, dramatically cheaper. The town historically was a key trade gateway on the Indo-Tibetan trade route until 1962. Today it is best known for its monasteries (Durpin, Tharpa Choling, Zang Dhok Palri), the cactus and orchid nurseries that supply most of India's flower-shop industry, Dr Graham's Homes (the 1900-founded Scottish mission school), and the Teesta valley views from Durpin Dara. This is the honest 2026 guide — what to do, where to stay, what it costs, and how it compares to Darjeeling.
The main sights — what to do in Kalimpong
Durpin Monastery (Zang Dhok Palri Phodang)
The most-photographed monastery in Kalimpong, built 1976 with funding from the Dalai Lama's circle. Three-storey, ornate prayer-hall murals (some of the best Newari Buddhist art in the region), gilded statues of the Buddha and Padmasambhava on the upper levels. The monastery sits on Durpin Hill at 1,372 m. Allow 60-90 minutes. Free entry; donations appreciated. Combine with Durpin Dara viewpoint (5-minute walk above the monastery) for the Teesta valley panorama.
Tharpa Choling Monastery (Tirpai)
The older Gelugpa monastery in Kalimpong, founded 1922 by the Tibetan refugee community. Less touristed than Durpin. The 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. prayer services are open to respectful visitors. Walking distance from the town centre. Allow 45 minutes. Free.
The cactus and orchid nurseries
Kalimpong is the cactus capital of India — the nurseries here supply most of the country's commercial cacti, orchids, and ornamental plants. Standford's Nursery (the oldest, established 1958), Pineview Nursery, and the Sericulture Nursery are the three biggest to visit. ₹50-100 entry each, allow 30-45 minutes per nursery. The peak bloom for orchids is March-May. Standford's also has a small museum of the family's 60+ year cactus trade.
Dr Graham's Homes
Founded 1900 by Reverend Dr John Anderson Graham as a Scottish Mission school for Anglo-Indian children. The campus is sprawling (450 acres, 12 cottages serving as student housing), with the chapel (1925) still in active use. Open to visitors during school hours. The view from the campus over the Teesta valley is excellent. Allow 60 minutes. ₹40 entry.
Other sights worth time
- Crawford Market — the working bazaar of Kalimpong, open daily except Sundays. Local vegetables, dairy, hand-woven textiles, the Saturday haat (weekly market) is particularly worth seeing
- Morgan House — colonial-era stone heritage building from 1930, now a state hotel; the architecture is worth visiting even if not staying
- Deolo Hill — at 1,704 m, the highest point in Kalimpong with 360-degree views including Kanchenjunga on clear mornings. 5 km drive from town
- Lava and Lolegaon day trip — small forest villages 33 km away with the famous Canopy Walk at Lolegaon. Full day trip, ₹4,000-5,500 vehicle hire
- Cochrane Place (Kurseong, on the way) — a heritage hotel-stay option if combining Darjeeling-Kalimpong-Kurseong loops
Kalimpong vs Darjeeling — which to pick
Darjeeling is more famous, more developed, more touristed and more expensive. Kalimpong is quieter, lower-altitude, cheaper, less commercialised. Darjeeling has the Toy Train, Tiger Hill sunrise, Happy Valley first-flush tea, the HMI Museum and the Mall. Kalimpong has Durpin, the cactus nurseries, Dr Graham's Homes and the Teesta valley views. The standard travel decision: do Darjeeling for the famous sights (3 nights) plus Kalimpong as the slower follow-on (2 nights). Most travellers spend 60-70 per cent of their time in Darjeeling and 30-40 per cent in Kalimpong. Repeat visitors and those returning for the second time tend to spend more time in Kalimpong because of the quieter pace.

When to visit Kalimpong
October-November for clear weather and Kanchenjunga views from Durpin Dara, March-May for the orchid and cactus bloom at the nurseries, and post-monsoon September for the cleanest air. Avoid May (peak crowds), June-September (monsoon, slippery on the cobbled lanes), and late December-February (cold and overcast on many days). Kalimpong is 800 metres lower than Darjeeling — daytime temperatures are 3-4°C warmer year-round, which makes it easier for older travellers and for the cold months.
