Muktinath Yatra: complete guide to the 3,710m temple, jeep route and Pokhara base

Muktinath Temple sits at 3,710 metres in the Mustang district — sacred to both Hindus (one of 108 Divya Desams) and Buddhists. The road from Pokhara via Jomsom takes 2 days. Helicopter day-trips cost ₹35,000-45,000 per person. Honest guide with costs, route options and altitude facts.

Muktinath Temple is one of the most-visited high-altitude pilgrimage sites in the Himalayas. It sits at 3,710 metres (12,172 feet) in the Mustang district of north-central Nepal, 170 km north of Pokhara. The temple is sacred to both Hindus (one of the 108 Divya Desams of Vishnu, and one of the Char Dham of the Himalayas) and Buddhists (who call it Chumig Gyatsa, "the place of a hundred springs"). Three routes lead there — jeep from Pokhara via Jomsom (2 days each way, the standard route), helicopter day-trip from Pokhara (3-4 hours total, premium), and the classic Annapurna Circuit trek (14-18 days, for trekkers). We have run Muktinath yatras for 50+ guests since 2018, mostly via the jeep route. This is the honest guide.

Three ways to reach Muktinath

1. Jeep route via Jomsom (standard, 2 days each way)

The most-used route for pilgrims. From Pokhara, drive 7-8 hours to Jomsom (2,743 m) on Day 1 via Beni and Tatopani. Overnight in Jomsom — basic guesthouses, hot springs at Tatopani if you stop. Day 2: drive 3 hours from Jomsom to Muktinath via Kagbeni (a striking medieval village on the Kali Gandaki gorge). Time at the temple: 3-4 hours including the kunda bath, the eternal flame darshan, and the 108 dhara water spouts. Return to Jomsom by evening or directly to Pokhara on Day 3. Total: 2 nights, 3 days at minimum.

2. Helicopter day-trip from Pokhara (premium, 3-4 hours)

Helicopter departures from Pokhara typically run 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. for the best weather window. Flight time Pokhara → Muktinath helipad: 25 minutes each way. Ground time at the temple: 90-120 minutes. Total trip time 3-4 hours. Cost: roughly NPR 30,000-40,000 (~₹35,000-45,000) per person depending on operator and seasonality. Helicopter visits skip the altitude acclimatisation that the jeep route provides; about 5-8 per cent of helicopter pilgrims report mild altitude symptoms while at the temple. Senior pilgrims who cannot tolerate the jeep ride often choose this option.

3. Annapurna Circuit trek (14-18 days, for trekkers only)

The classical pilgrimage route — walking from Besisahar through the Annapurna Circuit, crossing the Thorong La Pass at 5,416 metres, and descending to Muktinath as the spiritual high-point. 14-18 days depending on pace and side trips. This is not a yatra in the pilgrimage sense; it is a serious trek. The Thorong La crossing requires technical fitness and acclimatisation. For pilgrims wanting to combine a long walk with the temple darshan, this is the deep version.

Permits required

  • Nepal entry — Indians need passport or Voter ID. Foreigners need passport with Nepal visa (visa-on-arrival USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days). Aadhaar card NOT accepted
  • ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) — NPR 3,000-4,000 (~USD 23-30). Required for the Muktinath region including the jeep route from Pokhara
  • TIMS card — required only if you are trekking (Annapurna Circuit). Jeep/helicopter visitors do not need TIMS
  • Restricted Area Permit for Upper Mustang — NOT required for Muktinath itself (which is in Lower Mustang). Required only if you continue north of Kagbeni

When to go

October to mid-December is the primary pilgrimage window — clear post-monsoon weather, stable road conditions, comfortable daytime temperatures at the temple (5-12°C), accessible by jeep without snow risk. March to mid-May is the secondary window — warming weather, less reliable post-snow road conditions in early March, beautiful spring colours in the Mustang valleys. Mid-May to early September is monsoon — the Jomsom flight (which some operators use to shorten the jeep ride) becomes unreliable, and landslides on the access road are common. Late December to February is winter — cold (-5°C at the temple at night), some accommodation closures, but doable for hardened pilgrims.

Cost breakdown — Indian pilgrims

  • Standard jeep package (2N/3D from Pokhara, mid-tier guesthouses): ₹14,000-22,000 per person for two adults sharing
  • Premium jeep package (private vehicle, better Jomsom hotel): ₹26,000-38,000 per person
  • Helicopter day-trip from Pokhara: ₹35,000-45,000 per person (often quoted in NPR 30,000-40,000)
  • Add Pokhara hotel nights either side: ₹2,500-6,500/night depending on tier
  • Add Kathmandu nights for Pashupatinath darshan: ₹3,500-7,500/night
  • Add flights Delhi/Mumbai/Kolkata to Kathmandu: ₹8,000-22,000 return
  • Total Muktinath-only trip from India: ₹35,000-65,000 per person typical; combined with Pashupatinath in Kathmandu adds 3-4 days and ₹15,000-25,000

Altitude — what to expect

Muktinath at 3,710 m is moderate altitude — significantly lower than Gurudongmar Lake (5,430 m) but still genuinely altitude. The jeep route gives partial acclimatisation through Jomsom (2,743 m); the helicopter route does not. About 10-15 per cent of helicopter visitors and 5-8 per cent of jeep visitors report mild altitude symptoms (headache, mild breathlessness) at the temple. These usually resolve within an hour at the temple complex itself. Senior pilgrims (60+) should consult a doctor before the trip; Diamox prescription is sometimes recommended. The 108 dhara water bath at 3,710 m in winter is genuinely cold — bring a quick-dry towel and a warm change of clothes for after.

Combine with Pashupatinath (the natural yatra pair)

Most Indian Hindu pilgrims combine Muktinath with Pashupatinath in Kathmandu. Pashupatinath at the Kathmandu eastern outskirts is one of the most important Shaivite temples in the world (founded 5th century, current structure 17th), the largest Hindu temple complex in Nepal, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The combined Pashupatinath + Muktinath yatra runs 6-8 days from arrival in Kathmandu: 2 nights Kathmandu (Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Swayambhunath), fly or drive to Pokhara, 2-3 day Muktinath circuit, return Kathmandu, depart. We have run 30+ combined yatras since 2020 and this is the most-booked package shape.
