Sikkim distances and drive times: how far every route really is, and why it takes longer than the map says

Real road distances and honest drive times for every Sikkim and Darjeeling route, from a Gangtok operator. Bagdogra to Gangtok is 123 km but 4.5 hours; Lachen to Gurudongmar is 62 km but 3.5 hours. Full distance tables for arrival transfers, inter-town routes, North Sikkim and the East Sikkim day trips.

The single biggest planning mistake we see for Sikkim is reading a distance and assuming a time. A mapping app will tell you Gangtok to Lachung is 117 km and quietly suggest three hours. On the ground it is six to seven. Sikkim's mountain roads run at 18 to 30 km per hour once you leave the highways: hairpins, single-lane stretches, army convoys, landslide repairs and altitude all slow you down. This is the honest distance and drive-time reference we give our own guests, built from route data we use to plan real trips out of Gangtok.

Arrival transfers: from Bagdogra and NJP

Almost every Sikkim trip starts at Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or New Jalpaiguri railway station (NJP), both near Siliguri in North Bengal. These are your first, and longest, drives.

RouteDistanceDrive time
Bagdogra Airport → Gangtok123 km~4.5 hr
NJP Station → Gangtok113 km~4 hr
Bagdogra Airport → Pelling135 km~5 hr
Bagdogra Airport → Darjeeling68 km~3.5 hr
Bagdogra Airport → Kalimpong76 km~3 hr
Bagdogra Airport → Namchi100 km~4 hr
The Bagdogra to Gangtok drive follows NH-10 along the Teesta river. Short in kilometres, slow in practice because of the gorge road and Sevoke-Rangpo traffic.

Between the hill towns

These are the transfers you make as you move around the region. They look short on a map and eat half a day in reality, which is exactly why pacing matters (see our itinerary stress test).

RouteDistanceDrive time
Gangtok → Pelling124 km~5 hr
Gangtok → Darjeeling96 km~4.5 hr
Gangtok → Kalimpong75 km~3.5 hr
Gangtok → Ravangla64 km~3 hr
Gangtok → Namchi76 km~3.5 hr
Gangtok → Yuksom116 km~5.5 hr
Pelling → Darjeeling68 km~4 hr
Pelling → Yuksom55 km~2 hr
Ravangla → Pelling50 km~2.5 hr
Darjeeling → Kalimpong51 km~3 hr
Gangtok to Pelling and Gangtok to Darjeeling are the two most common inter-town transfers. Both descend into the Teesta or Rangeet valley and climb back up, which is why 96-124 km takes 4.5-5 hours.

North Sikkim: Lachung, Lachen, Yumthang, Gurudongmar

North Sikkim is where the distance-to-time gap is widest. The roads above Chungthang gain altitude fast and the surface is rough. These are the drives that make people say the trip felt tiring, so plan them with rest built in.

RouteDistanceDrive time
Gangtok → Lachung117 km~6.5 hr
Gangtok → Lachen123 km~7 hr
Lachen ↔ Lachung49 km~3 hr
Lachen → Gurudongmar Lake (one way)~62 km~3.5 hr
Lachung → Yumthang Valley (one way)~25 km~1.5 hr
Yumthang → Zero Point (one way)~23 km~1.5 hr
The Lachen to Gurudongmar day is about 128 km round trip and, with the dawn start and time at 5,430 m, runs 6-7 hours in total. Do not also drive to Gangtok the same day.

East Sikkim day trips: Tsomgo, Nathula, Silk Route

RouteDistanceDrive time
Gangtok → Tsomgo Lake~40 km~2 hr
Gangtok → Nathula (via Tsomgo)~54 km~3 hr
Gangtok → Zuluk (via Tsomgo, Silk Route)93 km~4.5 hr
The Tsomgo-Baba Mandir-Nathula loop is a full-day round trip of about 120 km from Gangtok. The permit checkpoint at Kyongnosla adds time; leave Gangtok by 7 AM.

Why Sikkim drives take longer than the distance suggests

  • Road speed: outside the NH-10 highway stretch, effective speed is 18 to 30 km per hour. Hairpins, single-lane sections and blind corners make faster driving unsafe.
  • Altitude and surface: the North Sikkim roads above Chungthang are rough and climb steeply. Vehicles crawl, especially the last stretches to Gurudongmar and Zero Point.
  • Checkpoints: permit and army checkposts on the Nathula, Silk Route and North Sikkim axes add 15 to 45 minutes each.
  • Monsoon repairs: from June to September, landslide clearance on the Sevoke-Rangpo highway and the Chungthang road can add an hour or more without notice.
  • Convoys and traffic: army convoys have right of way on border roads, and the Bagdogra-Gangtok gorge road bottlenecks around Sevoke and Rangpo.

Where these numbers come from

Road distances are from our own transport routing system, used to plan and cost real bookings out of Gangtok. Drive times are operator estimates including rest and permit stops, drawn from running these routes since 2012. Both are approximate; the exact figure for your trip depends on season, road repairs, your vehicle and how many halts you take. Treat these as honest planning benchmarks. Frequently asked

Questions we get all the time

Gurudongmar Lake is about 62 km one way from Lachen, and the round-trip day covers roughly 128 km. Despite the modest distance it takes 6 to 7 hours in total because the road climbs to 5,430 m on a rough surface and you start before dawn. Most itineraries do Gurudongmar as a dedicated day from an overnight in Lachen, not combined with the long drive back to Gangtok.
