A Sikkim trip from Mumbai, Bangalore or Chennai is genuinely a flight-only proposition. The distances are 1,900-2,200 km from each of these cities to Sikkim and the trains take 36-40 hours via Howrah Junction with at least one change. Direct flights from Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai to Bagdogra make this a 3-3.5 hour journey followed by the 4.5-hour drive to Gangtok. For south-Indian travellers the additional consideration is the genuine temperature shock — Bangalore at 22°C in October to Gangtok at 8°C overnight. This is the south-India-origin guide.
Mumbai to Sikkim
- Mumbai (BOM) to Bagdogra (IXB) — daily direct flights, IndiGo, Air India, Vistara, SpiceJet, Akasa. 3 hours flight time
- Typical fare: ₹5,500-12,000 one-way economy, depending on season and booking lead time
- Best morning departure: IndiGo 6E-5311 at 04:55 from Mumbai, arriving Bagdogra 08:50 — gives a full day to reach Gangtok
- Train option: Mumbai LTT to Howrah (33 hours, ₹4,500-6,500 in 2A), then change to Darjeeling Mail to NJP (10 hours overnight, ₹1,400-1,700 in 2A), then road. Total 50+ hours. Not recommended unless rail-travel is the goal
Bangalore to Sikkim
- Bangalore (BLR) to Bagdogra — daily direct flight by Vistara (3 hours). IndiGo also operates via Kolkata stop
- Typical fare: ₹6,500-14,000 one-way economy
- Best timing: morning Vistara departure 06:30 BLR, arriving Bagdogra 09:30 — full day to Gangtok
- Train option: Bangalore to Howrah (28 hours) plus Howrah to NJP (10 hours). Total 40+ hours, not recommended
Chennai to Sikkim
- Chennai (MAA) to Bagdogra — direct flight mostly via Kolkata, occasionally direct (IndiGo, Air India). 3-4 hours including layover where applicable
- Typical fare: ₹6,500-14,000 one-way economy
- Best routing: book the direct flight when available; the Kolkata layover adds 1-2 hours but reduces fare. Worth it for early-morning Chennai → late-morning Bagdogra arrival
- Train option: Chennai to Howrah (28 hours) plus Howrah to NJP (10 hours). 40+ hours. Skip
The temperature shift — what southerners need to pack
A Mumbai traveller stepping off the plane in Gangtok in October encounters a 12-15°C overnight temperature drop from typical Mumbai weather. Bangalore guests are slightly better prepared because Bangalore evenings drop to 16-18°C in winter; Chennai travellers experience the biggest shift. This is the practical consequence: south-India-origin travellers consistently arrive under-prepared for Sikkim cold.
- October trips: bring a fleece jacket plus a windbreaker. Gangtok daytime is comfortable (15-22°C) but evenings drop to 8-12°C
- November-March trips: bring a proper down jacket. Overnight in Lachung and Lachen is 0-5°C; Gurudongmar dawn is -5°C
- May trips: light layers. Mid-day Gangtok is warm (20-22°C); evenings cool
- Thermal base layer for any North Sikkim trip (Lachung-Lachen) regardless of season
- Sturdy walking shoes — Gangtok cobblestones can be slippery in damp morning air
- Light gloves and beanie for early-morning viewpoint visits (Tashi at 5:30 a.m.)
Altitude considerations — south-India lowlanders
Travellers from sea-level cities (Mumbai, Chennai) face slightly higher altitude-symptom rates at Sikkim destinations than travellers from Delhi or Bangalore. The differential is small (1-3 per cent higher AMS rates at Gurudongmar) but real. Recommendations: arrive in Gangtok (1,650 m) and stay 1-2 days at Gangtok altitude before pushing to Lachung (2,750 m). Drink 3-4 litres of water daily. Skip alcohol on the high-altitude days. Discuss Diamox with your doctor before the trip if you are over 60 or have respiratory conditions. The standard 7-day itinerary builds acclimatisation in naturally.
Cost — south-India origin
- Mumbai flight round-trip for two adults: ₹22,000-48,000 + Bagdogra-Gangtok-Bagdogra taxi ₹8,400-10,400 = ₹30,400-58,400
- Bangalore flight round-trip for two adults: ₹26,000-56,000 + taxis ₹8,400-10,400 = ₹34,400-66,400
- Chennai flight round-trip for two adults: ₹26,000-56,000 (via Kolkata layover sometimes) + taxis ₹8,400-10,400 = ₹34,400-66,400
- Add the Sikkim trip cost (₹40,000-80,000 per person for 7-day mid-tier): total ₹1,15,000-2,25,000 for two adults trip
Practical tips for south-India travellers
- Book the morning flight from your origin city — arrival at Bagdogra by mid-day gives you the full afternoon for the 4.5-hour drive to Gangtok before dark
- Bagdogra to Gangtok by night is genuinely dangerous on the mountain switchbacks — schedule daylight arrivals
- Bagdogra airport has decent food options but no AC waiting lounges for non-premium ticket holders. The pre-paid taxi counter is just outside the arrival hall
- South-Indian food in Sikkim: limited options. Bring a few packs of MTR ready-to-eat or similar for the first 2 days if you are sensitive to non-South-Indian food. Roll House and a few cafés in Gangtok do dosa-style options. Most hotels have an Indian menu
- Mobile signal: Jio, Airtel and Vi/Vodafone cover all major Sikkim destinations. BSNL covers North Sikkim where private operators fail. Activate roaming or buy a Sikkim local SIM if you are staying longer than 7 days
- UPI works across most of Sikkim except very remote North Sikkim homestays. Carry cash for the rural stretches
