What Chungthang is really like
Chungthang is where North Sikkim splits: Lachen road right (Gurudongmar), Lachung road left (Yumthang), and the two rivers meet right at town. Most travellers stop 20 minutes and keep moving. Those who stay discover a compact junction town with a river confluence worth a longer look, a small monastery with a Padmasambhava connection and a strategic base for an early start to Gurudongmar. We stop here on every North Sikkim itinerary and guests who take 20 minutes to walk down to the river confluence rather than waiting in the vehicle consistently call it an unexpected highlight — two mountain rivers arriving from opposite valleys and meeting in a narrow gorge directly below the market.
Why travellers love Chungthang
Lachen-Lachung river confluence
The Lachen Chu and Lachung Chu meet at Chungthang — their glacial waters visibly different shades where they join. The start of the Teesta river. Photogenic and genuinely interesting even for non-photographers.
Strategic junction for North Sikkim
Every North Sikkim itinerary pivots through Chungthang. Staying here instead of Lachen or Lachung can give you an earlier start to Gurudongmar — critical in shoulder season when weather windows are short.
Chungthang Monastery
A small Nyingma gompa in the town centre linked by tradition to Guru Padmasambhava's passage through the Himalayas. A quiet 20-minute stop while your driver refuels.
Gateway to the North Sikkim gorge
The road north from Chungthang passes through dramatic gorge scenery — vertical rockfaces, waterfalls and a valley that narrows to just the road and the river. A sight in itself.

Hotels in Chungthang
Basic guesthouses serve the transit trade. Nothing luxurious but functional for a night.
Transit guesthouses in the bazaar, ranging from basic rooms with shared bathrooms to slightly better attached-bathroom options. Chungthang is a working mountain junction town — don't expect resort standards. Hot water by electric geyser or bucket depending on the property. Adequate for the one night most itineraries require; your main criteria should be a clean bed and a working geyser.
When to visit Chungthang
April to June and September to November are when Chungthang is at its best — the road continues north to Lachen and Lachung without snowfall risk, the Lachen Chu and Lachung Chu rivers are at manageable levels and the Guru Rinpoche monastery above the bazaar is fully accessible. December to March the upper routes are snow-blocked and Chungthang functions as a mandatory transit stop rather than a place to explore.
Rhododendrons blooming in the gorge, Gurudongmar accessible.
Clear skies, best visibility, cool temperatures.
Heavy rain, potential road blockages in the gorge above town.
Upper Lachen and Lachung routes may close. Chungthang accessible but forward routes uncertain.
Chungthang's small bazaar has tea stalls, basic dhabas and hardware shops serving a mountain road economy. The local momos are reliably good and chhang is warming after a cold mountain drive. Don't expect restaurants — eat at your guesthouse. Fill up on fuel here; petrol stations above Chungthang are unreliable.
Chungthang questions we get all the time
What our travellers say
“We'd been to Ladakh and Kerala, but nothing prepared us for Sikkim. The itinerary felt like it was written by someone who truly loves this place — because it was.”
“The permit process alone would have put us off. They handled everything — inner line, protected area, Nathu La. We just showed up.”
