“We'd been to Ladakh and Kerala, but nothing prepared us for Sikkim. The itinerary felt like it was written by someone who truly loves this place — because it was.”
What Mangan is really like
Mangan (950m) is the district headquarters of North Sikkim and the last proper town before the mountains close in. The Teesta Valley drive from Rangpo to Mangan is one of the most scenic valley roads in the Eastern Himalayas. Singhik viewpoint just north of town gives one of the best Kanchenjunga panoramas accessible by road in all of Sikkim. For Dzongu, Mangan is the permit-issuing point. We stop every group here for the Singhik viewpoint 28 km south on the same road, and for fuel, provisions and the large-cardamom stalls in the bazaar — the cardamom grown in these valleys is available at source prices and is the best thing to buy in Mangan.
Why travellers love Mangan
Best road-accessible Kanchenjunga panorama in North Sikkim
Singhik viewpoint, 28 km before Mangan, gives a 360° panorama of the Teesta valley and the full Kanchenjunga group. Most travellers pass through — stop here for 30–45 minutes.
Phensang Monastery
A major Nyingma gompa in the forest above Mangan, hosting the Kagyed mask dance in December. A forested walk from the road makes it a worthwhile 1.5-hour detour.
Teesta Valley scenic drive
The 60km cliff road above the turquoise Teesta from Rangpo to Mangan is a spectacle in itself — class it as a sightseeing drive, not just transit. The section from Singhik to Mangan is the most dramatic.
Logistics base for Dzongu
The Dzongu Area permit is issued at the ADM office in Mangan. Your Dzongu homestay arranges pickup from here. Every Dzongu itinerary passes through Mangan.

Hotels in Mangan
Basic town accommodation. Mangan is a practical overnight, not a destination.
The Mangan bazaar has several guesthouses of similar grade: clean rooms, hot water by bucket or electric geyser, basic restaurant attached. Hotel Singhik View has the best valley aspect of the lot. For Dzongu permit holders, your Dzongu homestay host often recommends a specific Mangan guesthouse for the permit-collection night — take their recommendation, it saves the guesswork.
When to visit Mangan
October to April for the clearest views from Singhik viewpoint — the Kanchenjunga panorama is best on October and November mornings before the valley haze builds, and the Teesta runs turquoise rather than brown. December is the month for the Phensang Monastery Kagyed dance festival — one of the most theatrical Buddhist festivals in North Sikkim. Monsoon (June–September) sees the Teesta in brown spate, the Singhik viewpoint cloud-covered and the cliff road carrying real landslide risk.
Good visibility, Kanchenjunga views from Singhik, comfortable temperatures.
Cold but the Phensang Kagyed mask dance makes December special. Dress warmly.
Rain season — valley greenery is beautiful but visibility for mountains is poor.
Mangan's bazaar is a functional North Sikkim market town with provisions, fuel and basic dhabas. The Teesta Valley produce — large cardamom, ginger, turmeric and oranges — is sold from roadside stalls at prices far below Gangtok. Buy large cardamom here: it's grown in the valleys below and is cheaper than anywhere else in the region.

What our travellers say
“The permit process alone would have put us off. They handled everything — inner line, protected area, Nathu La. We just showed up.”
