What Kurseong is really like
Kurseong (1,458m) is the mid-point on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway's climb — transitional, layered and overlooked in favour of the more famous destination above. But the tea here (Makaibari has sold at world-record auction prices), the Dow Hill forest walk and the restored Cochrane Place bungalow make it a genuine destination rather than just a stop. We include the Makaibari factory visit on almost every Darjeeling circuit. The biodynamic fields, the sorting room, the side-by-side comparison of grades — it's the most practical tea education available in the hills, and guests who were indifferent about tea before arrive in Darjeeling genuinely interested. For guests who want colonial atmosphere over modern comfort, Cochrane Place is the property we consistently recommend.
Why travellers love Kurseong
Makaibari — Darjeeling's oldest biodynamic estate
Established 1859, Makaibari was the first Darjeeling estate to go biodynamic. Its Silver Tips Imperial has sold at world-record auction prices. Factory tours and direct purchase at estate prices are available.
Dow Hill forest — 200+ bird species
The forest road above Dow Hill passes through misty temperate forest with 200+ recorded bird species and rhododendrons lining the track. Eagle Craig viewpoint at the top gives Kanchenjunga panoramas.
UNESCO Darjeeling Himalayan Railway loops
The toy train reverses on characteristic loops through Kurseong. The Tindharia loop is photogenic and joy rides run between Kurseong and Darjeeling on select days.
Cochrane Place — 1920s colonial bungalow
A perfectly restored 1920s colonial property open for day visitors' afternoon tea and estate walks. Original floors, fireplaces and period furniture. The most atmospheric heritage property in the district.

Hotels in Kurseong
Kurseong has fewer options than Darjeeling but quality has improved. Cochrane Place is the standout heritage property; Makaibari has an estate homestay.
Basic guesthouses near the railway station and bazaar. Clean rooms suitable for a one-night Makaibari stop. The station area also has railway retiring rooms for guests arriving on the toy train — basic but functional and oddly atmospheric for a UNESCO railway night.
Cochrane Place is the obvious choice for atmosphere — 1920s colonial bungalow, open fireplaces, the original veranda with mountain views. Books out weeks ahead in peak season; reserve early. For modern-standard rooms with reliable mountain views, Mainak Tourist Lodge is well-maintained.
Where to eat in Kurseong
Kurseong has a compact but good eating circuit centred on the railway town. The station area has the most concentrated options; Cochrane Place is worth the higher price once for the setting.
- Dom's Bakery₹50 – 150
The town institution near the station — fresh bread, croissants and excellent Darjeeling tea from 7am. The plum cake is justifiably famous locally. Go early; popular items sell out by mid-morning.
- Railway dhaba opposite Kurseong station₹80 – 110
Basic thali and parathas where the locals eat. Fast, filling and unpretentious — the right option if you want to eat quickly before the toy train or a Makaibari morning visit.
- Cochrane Place dining room₹600 – 1,200 per head
The 1920s colonial bungalow serves proper three-course lunches in the original dining room — open fireplaces, period furniture, Makaibari tea service. Worth it once for the atmosphere. Book in advance; they cater to overnight guests first.
When to visit Kurseong
March and April bring the first-flush tea season — the best time to visit Makaibari when the factory runs at full pace and plucking is live in the biodynamic fields. October and November give fog-free forest walks on the Dow Hill trail and the clearest Himalayan Railway views. December and January are cold but clear and quiet — ideal for Cochrane Place's fireside atmosphere. Avoid mid-June to mid-September when the Dow Hill trail turns muddy and the toy train runs irregularly.
Clear mountain views, dry trails, busy weekend traffic. Best overall.
Tea plucking begins, rhododendrons in Dow Hill, warm clear days.
Cold (2–10°C), often clear, frost on the tea bushes — excellent for Dow Hill fog-free walks.
Heavy rain, misty forest walks, reduced mountain visibility.
Kurseong's bazaar is a working market without tourist pricing. Buy Darjeeling tea direct from Makaibari or from the estates near town — far better quality per rupee than the Chowrasta shops in Darjeeling. Dom's Bakery near the railway station is famous for its plum cake. The toy train whistle is audible from the bazaar — time your evening walk to catch the train crossing the road.
Kurseong questions we get all the time
What our travellers say
“We'd been to Ladakh and Kerala, but nothing prepared us for Sikkim. The itinerary felt like it was written by someone who truly loves this place — because it was.”
“The permit process alone would have put us off. They handled everything — inner line, protected area, Nathu La. We just showed up.”
