About Phensang Monastery

Phensang Sangag Chhoding Monastery is one of the most active and architecturally significant gompas in North Sikkim, set in the forest above Mangan at 1,350m. The monastery is large enough to house a substantial monk community and the main prayer hall is a two-storey structure with particularly fine Nyingma murals on both floors. The Phensang Gustor festival in December (sometimes January) brings masked Kagyed dancers and hundreds of local pilgrims. The forested walk up from the road (25 minutes) passes through a forest of oak, fern and orchid-covered trees and adds significantly to the atmospheric arrival at the monastery.

Why visit

Why go to Phensang Monastery

Major Nyingma monastery with Kagyed mask dance (December)

The annual Kagyed festival at Phensang is one of the most visually elaborate religious ceremonies in North Sikkim — masked monks in full regalia, drums, horns and community pilgrims.

Forest approach through orchid and fern canopy

The 25-minute uphill walk to the monastery passes through a mature forest where orchid plants grow on tree trunks throughout — a botanical walk as much as a religious approach.
