About Maenam Ridge Approach
The Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary is usually accessed from the Ravangla side, but the southern approach from Borong is less trafficked and the forest quality in the lower section is superior. The trail climbs from 1,200 m through dense large-cardamom cultivation under old-growth alder, entering the rhododendron and magnolia zone above 2,500 m. A half-day walk to the ridgeline gives views back into the Borong valley and across South Sikkim toward Kanchenjunga. Maenam summit (3,235 m) is 5–6 hours from Borong — a full-day effort — but even the first 2 hours through the cardamom forest justify starting the walk.
Why go to Maenam Ridge Approach
Dense large-cardamom forest
The lower section passes through one of the highest-density large-cardamom growing areas in Sikkim, cultivated under the natural forest canopy. The smell of cardamom pods in late summer is extraordinary.
High bird diversity in the sanctuary zone
Maenam sanctuary holds Satyr Tragopan, Blood Pheasant and multiple laughingthrush species. The Borong approach at dawn in spring is one of the better birding walks in South Sikkim.
Ridge views south over Borong valley
At approximately 2,500 m the forest opens and the South Sikkim hill ranges and the Borong valley come into view, with Kanchenjunga on the northern horizon on clear days.
How to reach Maenam Ridge Approach from Borong
The trailhead is on the upper road through Borong village. A local guide is strongly recommended — ask at your Borong homestay. The trail is not signed beyond the first section.
Best time to visit Maenam Ridge Approach
October to May. The forest is excellent year-round but monsoon (June–September) makes the paths very slippery. Spring (March–May) for rhododendron bloom in the upper zone. October–November for post-monsoon clarity and good birding.
Time of dayStart at 6 am to reach the rhododendron zone before cloud builds. The first 2 hours through the cardamom forest are the most interesting.
