About Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary

The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary protects a 43 sq km section of the Yumthang valley at 3,400–4,500m, sheltering 24+ documented species of rhododendron — the largest concentration in Sikkim. In April and May, when the trees bloom, the hillsides above the sanctuary trail turn from bare winter brown to bands of crimson, pink, white and purple as 24 different species flower in sequence over 6–8 weeks. This is not the casual rhododendron bushes of lower gardens — at 3,400m you are walking through 8–10m rhododendron trees with trunks as thick as your forearm, their canopies forming a dense ceiling overhead. The sanctuary is officially within the Yumthang Valley area and is usually visited as part of a Yumthang day trip from Lachung. The main trail through the sanctuary from the Yumthang road is 5–8km with minimal elevation change and takes 2–3 hours.

Why visit

Why go to Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary

24 rhododendron species in simultaneous bloom (April–May)

Not shrubs — full-sized rhododendron trees at 3,400m, their canopies closing overhead. The colour progression across 6–8 weeks of bloom is one of the most intense natural spectacles in the Eastern Himalaya.

Red Panda, snow leopard and musk deer habitat

The sanctuary also protects Red Panda, snow leopard, Himalayan black bear and musk deer. Early morning walks in the sanctuary (before the Yumthang day-trip crowds arrive) are the best window for wildlife.
