About Char Dham (Solophok)
The Char Dham complex on Solophok Hill above Namchi is a large religious theme park replicating the four most sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites (Char Dham): Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri and Rameshwaram — at 1/4 scale, set on a hilltop with a 33-metre statue of Lord Shiva at the centre. The complex was built by the Sikkim government and opened in 2011. It is the dominant religious attraction in South Sikkim and draws enormous numbers of Indian Hindu pilgrims for whom the Char Dham circuit is a lifetime ambition — this version allows the circuit without the distances. The complex is architecturally sincere in its replicas and genuinely well-maintained. The Shiva statue at the centre is the largest in Sikkim and visible from Namchi town below. Whether you come as a pilgrim or as a curious visitor, the scale of the complex and the panoramic view from Solophok Hill over the Teesta valley are the practical reasons to make the trip.
