About Samdruptse (Guru Rinpoche Statue)

The Samdruptse ('wish-fulfilling hill') statue is a 135-foot (41-metre) gilded copper statue of Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) — the Indian master who introduced Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century — on Ngadak Hill above Namchi. The statue is the largest of Guru Rinpoche in the world. Built over 7 years and inaugurated in 2004, the Samdruptse statue is the most photographed landmark in South Sikkim and is visible from the Teesta valley road approaching Namchi from a distance of 15km. The view from the viewing platform at the statue base looks across the full South Sikkim landscape — the Teesta bending below, the forested ridges extending toward Namchi, and on clear days the Kanchenjunga massif to the north. The base houses a small prayer hall.

Samdruptse (Guru Rinpoche Statue) — your questions answered

Guru Padmasambhava was a Tantric master from the Swat Valley (in modern Pakistan) who was invited to Tibet in the 8th century to subdue local spirits and establish Vajrayana Buddhism. He is the founder of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism — the oldest school, predominant in Sikkim. Every Nyingma monastery in Sikkim has his statue on the main altar. The Samdruptse statue commemorates his role as the spiritual father of Himalayan Buddhism.
