About Japanese Peace Pagoda
The Japanese Peace Pagoda on the northern edge of Darjeeling is one of 80+ identical structures built around the world by Nichidatsu Fujii, a Japanese Buddhist monk who founded the Nipponzan Myohoji movement. This one was completed in 1972 and sits at 2,100m on a hilltop reached by a 20-minute walk through pine forest from the Mall. It is completely white, circular, and crowned with a gold spire — the Shinto-influenced design is a striking contrast to the Tibetan Buddhist architecture that dominates the hills around it. Four gilded Buddha statues face the cardinal directions from niches in the drum. The walk up through the forest is half the experience: cool, quiet, the path wide enough for two but narrow enough to feel like it belongs to you. There are rarely crowds. The view from the pagoda platform faces north toward the Kanchenjunga range — the same view you'd pay for at Tiger Hill, but free and with no other tourists in the frame.
Why go to Japanese Peace Pagoda
Rare Japanese Buddhist architecture in the Himalayas
The pagoda design is striking in the hill station context — white, circular, utterly calm. Four gold Buddhas face the four directions. Worth the 20-minute walk just for the architecture.
A forest walk with a payoff
The path from the Mall passes through an intact pine forest — cool, bird-rich, and quiet. It is one of the best short walks in Darjeeling.
