About Karthok Lake
Karthok Lake is a small, sacred lake on the edge of Yuksom town — a dark, still pool with a lone white chorten rising from a small island in its centre. The lake is deeply embedded in local Buddhist tradition and pilgrims circle it clockwise with prayer beads, the same rotation they perform around any religious structure. The circumambulation path is short (10 minutes) and passes through light forest with the chorten always visible across the water. It combines naturally with a visit to the Norbugang coronation site (5-minute walk) and makes a contemplative 45-minute early morning circuit before the rest of Yuksom wakes up.
Why go to Karthok Lake
Sacred lake with a lone chorten — walking the circumambulation
The clockwise circuit of the lake on the pilgrimage path, watching the chorten float on the still water at sunrise, is a quietly powerful experience. Simple, uncrowded, and genuinely sacred.
Why Karthok Lake is revered
Sacred lake at the edge of Yuksom — the first capital of Sikkim. The chorten in the centre marks the lake as a consecrated Buddhist site. Pilgrims circuit it clockwise in the morning.
