About Goecha La Trek

The Goecha La Trek is the most celebrated high-altitude trek in Sikkim — a 10–12 day round trip from Yuksom (1,780m) to the Goecha La viewpoint (4,940m) at the base of the Kanchenjunga glacier, inside the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. The route climbs through four vegetation zones — subtropical forest, temperate oak-rhododendron, alpine scrub and high-altitude tundra — arriving at the Samiti Lake camp (4,200m) and then the viewpoint above it where Kanchenjunga's southwest wall rises directly above you, less than 5km away, filling the sky. This is not a technical mountaineering route; it is a trekking trail navigable by anyone fit enough for sustained days at altitude. The views of Kanchenjunga from Goecha La are considered the finest accessible view of the mountain anywhere.

Why visit

Why go to Goecha La Trek

The closest accessible view of Kanchenjunga (5km)

From the Goecha La viewpoint at 4,940m, the southwest wall of Kanchenjunga is 5km away. At that distance, at that altitude, the 8,586m peak fills the entire northern sky. No other standard trek in the Eastern Himalayas offers this proximity to an 8,000m peak.

Four complete vegetation zones on one trail

The ascent from 1,780m to 4,940m passes through subtropical forest, temperate rhododendron-oak, alpine meadow and high-altitude moraine — a complete vertical transect of the Eastern Himalayan ecosystem in one trek.

Practical notes

Things we always tell our guests about Goecha La Trek

  • Fitness requirement: this is a serious multi-day trek at altitude. 5 days/week of cardio exercise for 2 months before departure is the minimum preparation.
  • Acclimatisation is built into the itinerary — follow it; do not attempt to rush stages.
  • The trek is fully supported: We Care Holidays provides tents, sleeping bags, meals, an experienced guide and porters.
  • Altitude sickness is the main risk — know the signs (headache, nausea, loss of coordination) and understand the descent protocol.
Frequently asked

Goecha La Trek — your questions answered

It is more demanding than Kedarnath, the Valley of Flowers or even Roopkund in terms of altitude and sustained duration. Comparable to the Markha Valley or the Hampta Pass circuit. The key demands are: 10+ days' commitment, altitude up to 4,940m, and sustained daily effort. With proper acclimatisation and fitness, it is achievable for motivated non-mountaineer trekkers.
