About Senchal Lake & Wildlife Sanctuary
Senchal Lake is a Victorian-era reservoir at 2,600m inside the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, 11km from Darjeeling town. Built in 1886 to supply Darjeeling's drinking water, the lake looks like an English reservoir transplanted to the Himalayas — stone-edged, quiet, framed by oak and rhododendron forest. The reservoir is still the main water supply for Darjeeling today. The wildlife sanctuary surrounding it protects the Red Panda, Himalayan black bear, barking deer, civet and over 100 bird species. Red Panda sightings require patience and a guide, but the forest walk around the lake is worthwhile even if you don't see one. The road from Darjeeling to Senchal passes Tiger Hill — it is easy and efficient to combine both in a morning, particularly in October–November when both the sunrise view at Tiger Hill and the sanctuary forest are at their best.
