About Gnathang Monastery

Gnathang Monastery (Gnathang Gadenchoeling Gumpa) sits in the Nathang Valley at 3,400m on the Old Silk Route — a small, isolated Nyingma gompa that is one of the highest-altitude monasteries on this circuit. The valley around the monastery is wide and treeless at this elevation; in winter and early spring it is under heavy snow. When you arrive in April or May, the monastery may still have snow on its roof and ice on the approach path. Inside, butter lamps burn beside a modest altar with a single monk often in residence — the solitary scale of the place at 3,400m, in the silence of the high valley, is what stays with you. The 30 minutes here are among the most contemplative on the entire Old Silk Route trip.

Why visit

Why go to Gnathang Monastery

Isolated monastery at 3,400m on the Old Silk Route

One of the highest monasteries you can visit without special trekking permits. The solitary atmosphere at altitude — single monk, butter lamps, prayer flags in the wind — is as close as most visitors get to the traditional isolation of Tibetan mountain monasteries.
