About Kupup (Elephant) Lake
Kupup Lake, popularly called Elephant Lake for its shape, sits at 3,950m on the Old Silk Route near the village of Kupup in East Sikkim. It is a sacred glacial lake and one of the highest accessible lakes in East Sikkim. The surrounding terrain is above the tree line — open grassland, yak herds and distant peaks. Birdwatchers note it for Bar-headed Goose (one of the world's highest-flying birds) during spring and autumn migration. The Army uses the adjacent area and restrictions apply on photography direction.
Why go to Kupup (Elephant) Lake
Sacred glacial lake at 3,950m
Open high-altitude lake with elephant-silhouette shape, set in grassland with no visible human settlement. The scale and silence are profound.
Bar-headed goose and migratory waterbirds
The lake sits on a migration flyway and hosts bar-headed geese, brahminny ducks and various waders on their autumn passage. October and November visits are the most productive for birding. The Army's restricted-zone proximity means the lake is genuinely quiet — no tourist infrastructure, no vendors, just the birds and the wind.
Why Kupup (Elephant) Lake is revered
Sacred to both the local Lepcha and Bhutia communities. The lake is considered a guardian of the valley and is associated with protective spiritual traditions.

How to reach Kupup (Elephant) Lake from Zuluk
Kupup Lake is approximately 17 km past Nathu La Pass — usually combined as a further excursion on the Nathu La day trip, adding 30–40 minutes of driving on the plateau road. The lake is at 4,420m. Access requires the same Nathu La permit plus specific clearance for Kupup (confirm with your operator when booking). From the road, the lake is a short walk across open ground.
Best time to visit Kupup (Elephant) Lake
April to June and October to November, in line with the Nathu La permit season. October is the best single month: bar-headed geese on migration, the lake unfrozen, the surrounding plateau in autumn colour and the peak views sharpest after the monsoon. January to March the lake freezes and the access road from Nathu La is snowbound. The lake is most photogenic in late afternoon when the light comes from the west across the water.
