About Thambi Viewpoint
Thambi Viewpoint is one of the most dramatic viewpoints on the Old Silk Route in East Sikkim, perched at 11,200 ft (3,415m) on the ridge above the famous 32 zigzag hairpin bends of the Zuluk–Lungthung road. From here the full scale of the Old Silk Route's engineering becomes visible — the road switchbacks down the mountainside in tight hairpins, tiny jeeps speckling the turns. On clear mornings, the panorama extends across Kanchenjunga to the west, the Tibetan plateau to the north and on exceptional days the plains of Bengal to the south. Mist or cloud can arrive at any time — getting here early is essential.
Why go to Thambi Viewpoint
32 zigzag hairpin bends visible in one sweep
The full staircase of the Old Silk Route's infamous switchbacks is laid out below Thambi — tiny vehicles threading the turns create a surreal geometry against the mountain slope.
Multi-peak Himalayan panorama at 3,415m
Kanchenjunga to the west, the Tibetan plateau to the north, the Bengal plains far below on clear days. One of the widest panoramas in East Sikkim.
How to reach Thambi Viewpoint from Zuluk
Thambi is on the Old Silk Route between Zuluk and Lungthung. From Zuluk: 6 km uphill by vehicle (30 min). All Old Silk Route travel requires prior permit arrangement.
Best time to visit Thambi Viewpoint
October–November for post-monsoon clarity — the Kanchenjunga views are sharpest at this time. March–May for spring clear skies before the pre-monsoon haze. January–February can have snow on the road approaching the viewpoint.
Time of dayBefore 10am. Cloud builds from the valley below by midday. The most spectacular condition is when cloud fills the valley below while the peaks above remain clear — this creates an ocean-of-cloud effect around the hairpin bends.
What you need to visit Thambi Viewpoint
The Inner Line Permit and East Sikkim Restricted Area Permit (for the Old Silk Route) are required. We Care Holidays arranges these as part of every Zuluk/Old Silk Route package.
Things we always tell our guests about Thambi Viewpoint
- Arrive before 9am for the best conditions and before tour groups from Nathang Valley arrive.
- Carry a warm jacket — even in October, the ridge at 3,415m can be cold with wind.
- The viewpoint has no facilities — bring water and a snack.
- Do not wait for cloud to clear; it usually does not. If it clears, it is a bonus.
