About Lepcha Homestays (Community Tourism)

Dzongu is a protected Lepcha reserve in North Sikkim, straddling both banks of the Teesta river north of Mangan. Entry is restricted to travellers with a special Dzongu Area permit, and the Dzongu Lepcha Multipurpose Cooperative runs the only way in: a network of family homestays in villages across the reserve. Guests eat home-cooked Lepcha food — bamboo shoot dishes, fermented millet preparations, foraged river greens — join farm walks through large-cardamom groves, and participate in village life. The Lepcha people are the original inhabitants of Sikkim and their language, oral traditions and relationship with the forest survive in Dzongu in a living form that has almost entirely disappeared elsewhere. This is, without exaggeration, the most culturally irreplaceable destination in the Sikkim–Darjeeling region.

Why visit

Why go to Lepcha Homestays (Community Tourism)

Living Lepcha culture — found nowhere else

The Lepcha language, Mun shamanic practice and agricultural calendar survive in Dzongu in their living form. A stay here is a once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience.

Large-cardamom groves and forest farms

Cardamom cultivation under the natural forest canopy — a Lepcha agricultural tradition centuries old — covers the Dzongu hillsides. September–October harvest season is the best time for the full agricultural experience.

Mun shamanic traditions (by arrangement)

The Mun is the Lepcha shaman-priest who mediates between the human and spirit worlds. Evening sessions with a Mun can sometimes be arranged through the homestay cooperative for culturally serious travellers.

Permits

What you need to visit Lepcha Homestays (Community Tourism)

Practical notes

Things we always tell our guests about Lepcha Homestays (Community Tourism)

  • Book through We Care Holidays — the permit process requires a local recommendation from the cooperative and we have an established relationship with them.
  • Two nights minimum; three nights is what we recommend. One night is not enough to settle in.
  • Pack for variable weather — evenings can be cool even in October. North Sikkim altitude increases quickly above the villages.
  • Bring cash (no ATMs or mobile payment in the reserve).
  • Leave trekking poles at home for the village walks — they are not needed and they signal "tourist" in unhelpful ways in a community context.
