About Yumthang Hot Springs
The Yumthang Hot Springs emerge at the valley floor of the Yumthang meadow at 3,500m — a series of sulphurous vents beside the Teesta headwaters that produce water at around 50°C. There are two concrete bathing pools fed by the springs, with separate enclosures for men and women. The springs are used both by local Lachenpa and by visitors who have been in the mountains for several days and are ready for some warmth. The therapeutic claims are traditional — sulphurous springs at this altitude are used across the Himalaya for joint pain, skin conditions and general recovery. Whether or not you believe in the medicine, soaking in warm water at 3,500m with snow peaks above you is one of the more unusual experiences the North Sikkim circuit offers.
