About Yumthang Valley

Yumthang Valley ('meadow of hot springs' in Tibetan) at 3,564m is Sikkim's most spectacular easily accessible alpine landscape — a wide, flat valley floor ringed by 5,000m+ peaks, watered by the Teesta's headwaters and carpeted in flowering meadows from May to July. The valley sits inside the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, so the hillsides above the meadow are dense with rhododendron forest — 24 species, bursting into colour in April and May. The wide flat valley feels like you have crossed a geological threshold into the Tibetan plateau: the air is thin, the light is sharp and the scale of the mountains around you reframes distance.

Why visit

Why go to Yumthang Valley

Wide glacial meadow at 3,564m

Unlike most Himalayan valleys that are steep and narrow, Yumthang is flat and wide — you can walk for kilometres across the valley floor with 360° views of peaks. In May, the meadow is covered in flowering plants.

24 species of rhododendron in bloom (April–May)

The valley is inside the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary. In April and May, the hillsides turn crimson, pink and white — one of the most vivid botanical events in the eastern Himalaya.

Hot springs on the valley floor

The Shingba hot springs sit approximately 500m from the main car park on the valley floor — warm (around 35–38°C), undeveloped and usually quiet. Most visitors walk past; those who stop for 20 minutes find the combination of soaking feet in a thermal pool while surrounded by 5,000m peaks is one of the more unusual moments the valley offers.

Getting there

How to reach Yumthang Valley from Lachung

Yumthang Valley is 25 km from Lachung on the valley road that continues north from the village — approximately 1 to 1.5 hours by vehicle. The road is single-lane with convoy management in peak April–May season: ask your operator about the current one-way window. All access is by pre-arranged vehicle with North Sikkim Restricted Area Permit. The vehicle registration is specified on the permit — you cannot switch vehicles at Lachung.

When to go

Best time to visit Yumthang Valley

April to May is the rhododendron window — the Shingba Sanctuary hillsides turn crimson, pink and white as 24 species bloom simultaneously and the valley floor wildflowers begin opening. This is the most photographed season and the most crowded. June and July bring the yak herds to the valley floor and a carpet of wildflowers (primulas, poppies, gentians) — fewer people, equally vivid. October and November offer the clearest peak views and dry trails but no colour. The valley is closed November to March when the road above Lachung is snowbound.

Time of dayArrive at the valley before 11am — cloud can build around the peaks from midday. The morning light on the surrounding snowfields is the best photography window.

All Yumthang visitors must have: (1) Sikkim Inner Line Permit, (2) North Sikkim Restricted Area Permit. These are arranged as a package through registered tour operators including We Care Holidays. Foreign nationals have additional requirements. The permits specify the vehicle registration — you cannot swap vehicles.
