About Toong-Namprikdang Village Walk

The trail between Toong and Namprikdang — two Lepcha villages in the heart of the Dzongu reserve — is the experience that most defines a stay here. Both villages have traditional Lepcha raised stilt-houses with carved wooden granaries and hand-woven bamboo walls. The connecting trail passes through some of the most intact large-cardamom forest in North Sikkim. Village life here has changed little: farmwork, weaving, fishing in the Teesta tributaries and the annual agricultural calendar still structure daily life. This walk, guided by a village resident, is the reason to come to Dzongu.

Why visit

Traditional Lepcha stilt-houses

The raised stilt-houses of Toong and Namprikdang are among the most intact examples of traditional Lepcha domestic architecture remaining anywhere — not museum reconstructions, but people's homes.

Cardamom harvest in season (Sept–Oct)

The September to October harvest sees the whole community in the forest picking and processing cardamom pods. Drying mats spread around the village, communal work in the groves — the most atmospheric time to walk this trail.

Living village culture with intact agricultural calendar

The annual cycle of Toong and Namprikdang — planting, harvest, the Lepcha festivals tied to the forest calendar — continues as it has for generations.

Frequently asked

Toong-Namprikdang Village Walk — your questions answered

Most Sikkim village walks show communities that have adapted significantly to tourism. Toong and Namprikdang have not — the limited access (permit required, no independent visitors) has preserved an authenticity that is genuinely rare. The Lepcha culture here is not performed for visitors; it is simply how these villages live.
