About Tharpa Choling Monastery

Tharpa Choling Monastery, established in 1922, is the oldest monastery in Kalimpong — a Gelugpa gompa (the same tradition as the Dalai Lama) set on a gentle ridge above the town centre. The main shrine room is dominated by a 5-metre gilded statue of Maitreya, the future Buddha, which was commissioned in the 1940s and remains the most impressive piece of religious art in Kalimpong. The monastery runs an active school for young monks and a small library of Tibetan canonical texts. Most Kalimpong visitors go to Zong Dog Palri on Durpin Dara; Tharpa Choling is quieter and — for the Maitreya statue alone — equally worth 45 minutes of the morning.

Both are worth seeing; Tharpa Choling is better for the art and monastery atmosphere, Durpin Dara for the view.
