About Durpin Dara Hill
Durpin Dara is the highest accessible point in Kalimpong at 1,372m, topped by the Zong Dog Palri Fo-Brang Monastery (which we profile separately) and a small civilian observation point. The drive up the narrow road from the town is itself entertaining — hairpin bends, forest overhanging the road, occasional views opening suddenly. From the top, the panorama is genuinely extraordinary on a clear day: the Teesta gorge 700m below, the Nepalese hills to the west, the Bhutanese foothills to the east, and Kanchenjunga visible to the north — the claim of three countries in one view is accurate on the best mornings. The view is best October–December and February–March; the monsoon (June–September) typically brings cloud.
