About Eagle Craig Viewpoint
Eagle Craig is the highest accessible viewpoint in Kurseong, reached by a 3km forest trail from Dow Hill. The viewpoint sits at around 2,000m on the ridge above the town and faces both north (Kanchenjunga group) and east (Teesta valley) — a panorama that takes in more of the district geography than any single view from Darjeeling town. The trail from Dow Hill through the forest to Eagle Craig is itself the main event: oak, rhododendron and dense fern-covered floor, over 200 bird species documented, and the constant shifting light through the canopy that makes Dow Hill forest famous. Eagle Craig is the natural endpoint of the Dow Hill forest walk.
Why go to Eagle Craig Viewpoint
Best viewpoint in Kurseong — Kanchenjunga and Teesta together
The ridge at Eagle Craig faces both north and east, giving a combined view of the Kanchenjunga snowline and the Teesta valley that no other viewpoint in the Kurseong area offers.
200+ bird species in the Dow Hill forest — the walk is the destination
The 3km Dow Hill forest road that leads to Eagle Craig is one of the best birdwatching walks in the Darjeeling district. Fire-tailed myzornis, bay woodpecker and Himalayan laughingthrush are regularly spotted on this route. The viewpoint is the reward; the forest is the journey.
How to reach Eagle Craig Viewpoint from Kurseong
The forest trail starts at Victoria Boys School gate on Dow Hill Road, Kurseong — 15 minutes by taxi from the town centre (₹200). Walk the 3km Dow Hill forest road to its end, then take the Eagle Craig extension trail (30 minutes more). No vehicle access beyond the forest road start.
Best time to visit Eagle Craig Viewpoint
October–April for clear mountain and valley views. October–November is the best window — post-monsoon air gives the sharpest definition on the Kanchenjunga skyline. March–April brings rhododendron bloom along the Dow Hill forest road, which adds to the walk. Avoid May–September: valley cloud obscures the ridge view and the forest trail is muddy.
Time of dayMorning (8–10am) before cloud builds from the valleys.
