About Sumendu Lake
Sumendu Lake is the centre of Mirik — a 1.5km-long constructed lake at 1,495m, circled by a 3.5km path through orange orchards, pine trees and the tea estate rows that make the landscape here so distinctive. The lake was built in 1979 and a wooden arch bridge connects the two banks at the midpoint. It is not a natural lake and makes no pretence of being one — but the combination of the bridge, the mountain backdrop, the orange groves and the tea bushes on the surrounding hillside has made it the most photographed landscape in the Darjeeling hills after Tiger Hill. Boating is available; pony rides circle the path; the lakeside bench at the northern end frames Kanchenjunga directly on clear mornings. Mirik is quieter and more relaxed than Darjeeling, and the lake is the reason most visitors stay a night.
Why go to Sumendu Lake
Wooden arch bridge with Kanchenjunga backdrop
The wooden bridge over Sumendu Lake framing the mountains behind it is the signature image of Mirik — simple, unhurried, and genuinely beautiful in the October–November mountain clarity.
Orange orchards and tea estate circuit around the lake
The 3.5km circuit around the lake passes through the orange orchards, tea bushes and pine stands that define the Mirik valley. Different in character from every other lake walk in the Darjeeling hills.
Why Sumendu Lake is revered
Constructed lake (1979) at the centre of Mirik town — the landscape anchor of the Darjeeling hills' most relaxed hill resort, surrounded by orange orchards and tea estates.
