About Buddha Park (Tathagata Tsal)
Tathagata Tsal ('Buddha's playground' or 'Buddha's garden' in Sanskrit) is a 130-acre park containing a 130-ft (40m) statue of Lord Buddha, inaugurated by the Dalai Lama in 2013. The park sits at 2,286m above Ravangla with a clear view of Kanchenjunga behind the statue. Underground the statue's base, a maze of corridors explores the life of the Buddha through detailed narrative murals — an unusual structure that doubles as both monument and museum. The statue itself — serene, massive, facing north — is visible from the main Ravangla-Jorethang road kilometres away.
Why go to Buddha Park (Tathagata Tsal)
130-ft Buddha — inaugurated by the Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama consecrated the statue in 2013. The construction took 8 years. Underground, the narrative murals in the base corridors are exceptional — one of the most detailed Buddhist art installations in Sikkim.
Kanchenjunga directly behind the statue
The Buddha faces north toward Kanchenjunga. On clear October–November mornings, the framing of the gilt statue against the snow peak is one of the most photographed scenes in South Sikkim.
130-acre garden with forest walks
Most visitors see only the statue and its immediate base. The full Tathagata Tsal park is 130 acres of landscaped gardens and forest paths that surround the statue — a 45-minute walk through the full circuit passes ornamental gardens, smaller shrines and forest sections with Kanchenjunga visible through gaps in the canopy.
How to reach Buddha Park (Tathagata Tsal) from Ravangla
The Buddha Park is 2 km from Ravangla town centre on the Ravangla-Temi road. By taxi from Ravangla: 5 minutes, ₹100–150. On foot from the town centre: 25 minutes along the road. The park entrance is clearly signposted. Parking is available at the main gate.
Best time to visit Buddha Park (Tathagata Tsal)
October to May for clear Kanchenjunga views behind the statue — the combination of the golden statue and the white snowline is the definitive Ravangla photograph, and it only works on clear days. October and November are most reliable for the mountain to be out. The park is open year-round but monsoon months (June–September) bring persistent cloud that often obscures the peak entirely. Evening light (4–6pm) on the statue face produces the most dramatic photography angle from the garden path.
Time of dayMorning for the mountain backdrop view; sunset for the lit statue.
Things we always tell our guests about Buddha Park (Tathagata Tsal)
- Walk the underground corridors slowly — the narrative murals depicting the Buddha's life are detailed and worth reading.
- The statue is visible from the surrounding park at various angles — walk the full park perimeter for different compositions.
- Photography of the statue is unrestricted.
- The garden is well maintained and good for a gentle walk after the monastery visits.
- The underground chamber beneath the main statue contains meditation rooms — entry is free and usually quiet. The contrast between the vast outdoor scale of the statue and the intimate lamp-lit interior is unexpectedly affecting.
