About Darap Village
Darap is a traditional Tamang village 4 km below Rinchenpong, terraced into the hillside above the Rangit river at 1,450 m. The village has developed into a model community-based tourism destination in West Sikkim, with a cooperative of family-run homestays, guided farm walks through cardamom and millet terraces, and evenings with tomba — the Tamang fermented millet beer served in bamboo vessels with hot water. The terraced farmscape is attractive in all seasons, and the warmth of the homestay hosts is the quality that most visitors mention first when they get back.
Why go to Darap Village
Cardamom and millet terraces
Darap's hillside is covered with terraced cardamom, millet and maize. The visual effect — stepped green terraces rising from the river to the forest — is one of the most attractive agricultural landscapes in West Sikkim.
Tomba millet beer tradition
The Tamang people of Darap maintain the tradition of brewing and serving tomba — fermented millet in a wooden or bamboo vessel with a metal straw. The homebrew is mild and deeply warming on cold evenings.
Community homestay cooperative
The village cooperative ensures tourism income is shared across the community. Guests are assigned to different family homes — each stay is genuinely personal, not a hotel experience.
