About MG Marg
MG Marg is the pedestrian heart of Gangtok — a 500m traffic-free promenade that runs along the ridge of the city, lined with cafés, craft shops, momo vendors, government offices and the constant cross-traffic of Sikkim life. It was named after Mahatma Gandhi in 1991 and has been Gangtok's social centre ever since. Come at dusk, which is when it's best: the string lights come on, the shops throw open their windows, families from across Gangtok converge for the evening walk, and the momos carts along the lower end do brisk business. The mountain backdrop to the north is visible from the northern end of the Marg — on a clear evening the snow peaks catch the last orange light as the market hums below them. The shops sell everything from Sikkimese handicrafts and thangkas to sports gear and sweets, but the real reason to come is just to walk in the middle of a living Himalayan city that's at ease with itself.
Why go to MG Marg
The beating heart of Gangtok at dusk
Every evening the entire city seems to converge here. The energy between 5–8pm is unlike any other Himalayan hill station — busy, cheerful, inclusive.
Best shopping in East Sikkim
Sikkimese handicrafts, hand-woven textiles, prayer flags, thangkas, locally produced spirits and teas — better variety and better prices than the tourist markets.
Coffee shops with mountain views
Several cafés along the northern end have windows facing the Himalayan skyline. The momo stalls at the southern end are some of the best in Gangtok.
How to reach MG Marg from Gangtok
Central Gangtok — all hotels are within 5–15 minutes' walk of MG Marg. Taxis drop at both ends of the promenade.
Best time to visit MG Marg
Year-round at any time, but the evenings (5–8pm) are when it is at its best. October–April are cleaner and cooler; the monsoon months (June–September) are lively but often wet.
Time of dayDusk to 8pm. The light on the mountains is best around 5:30–6pm in the cooler months, and the promenade is at full energy from 6–8pm.
Things we always tell our guests about MG Marg
- Try the momos at the permanent stalls near the lower end — the jhol momo (momos in spicy broth) here are some of the best in Gangtok.
- Don't rush the shopping — the handicraft stores have significant variation in quality. The government-run Sikkim Co-operative Handicrafts Centre on the Marg is reliable for textiles.
- The fountain plaza at the centre of the Marg is the main gathering point — good for people-watching.
- Most restaurants near MG Marg are open until 10pm; the night market at the lower end continues later.
