About Ganesh Tok
Ganesh Tok is the smallest-to-get-to, highest-payoff viewpoint in Gangtok — a tiny Ganesha temple perched at 1,980m on a sharp hilltop above the Tashiling helipad, reachable by a steep 10-minute walk from the road. The temple itself is unpretentious: a small painted shrine, prayer bells, offerings of flowers. What brings people here is the 180° panorama that opens once you squeeze past the gate — Gangtok below you in one sweep and Kanchenjunga filling the northern horizon on clear mornings. Because the hilltop is narrow, only a handful of people fit at once, which gives it a quality that bigger viewpoints can't match: you're alone with the mountain. October and November are the clearest months; April and May are hazy but the rhododendrons are good. Walk down slowly — the path is steep.
Why go to Ganesh Tok
180° panorama of Kanchenjunga and the city
The hilltop sits above the main ridge of Gangtok — city below, Himalayan arc above. On clear October mornings you can see Kanchenjunga (8,586m), Pandim and the entire eastern snowline simultaneously.
A working temple, not a tourist attraction
Locals come here early morning to ring the bells and leave offerings. It feels lived-in. A short puja is often in progress when you arrive — you can watch or wait.
How to reach Ganesh Tok from Gangtok
