About Chowrasta (The Mall)
Chowrasta is the literal and emotional centre of Darjeeling — four roads meeting on a flat open square at 2,042m, ringed by wooden arcades, old buildings with peeling colonial facades, and mountain-facing benches that look out over the Kanchenjunga range on clear mornings. The name means 'four roads' in Hindi. The square itself is pedestrian-only, and the gentle daily ritual of Darjeeling converges here: the Morning Star School band practises on Sunday mornings, elderly Tibetan men do circuits with prayer beads, pony-wallahs lead painted horses around the perimeter, and from the northern benches you have the most effortless Kanchenjunga view in the district. The shops under the arcades — Nathmull's tea house, the Planters Club bar, a clutch of booksellers and handicraft shops — are the best in Darjeeling. Come at dusk as the string lights come on and you'll understand why Darjeeling has held its character longer than almost any other Indian hill station.
Why go to Chowrasta (The Mall)
Best open-air Kanchenjunga viewpoint in Darjeeling
The northern benches face the full Kanchenjunga massif with nothing in the foreground. In October–November the mountain is close enough that it fills the entire northern sky.

Nathmull's on Chowrasta has been selling Darjeeling tea since 1931. You can taste 20+ single-estate teas in one sitting.
Sunday morning band performance
The Morning Star School band performs on the Chowrasta bandstand on Sunday mornings — a holdover from the Raj era that somehow still happens every week.

Things we always tell our guests about Chowrasta (The Mall)
- Visit Nathmull's tea house for a tasting session — ask for first flush vs second flush vs muscatel and compare. This is the most efficient tea education in Darjeeling.
- The pony rides around the square are the classic Darjeeling photo — prices are negotiable (₹100–200 for a short circuit).
- The benches on the northern edge face Kanchenjunga directly — get there by 7:30am in October for the clearest mountain view.
- The Planters Club (1868) on the square allows non-members for a drink — worth a look at the wood-panelled colonial interior.
