About Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary

Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary covers 104 sq km of protected forest between 3,000 m and 4,500 m above Okhrey in West Sikkim. With 24 documented rhododendron species — from the massive tree rhododendrons at lower altitude to the tight ground-hugging shrubs above 4,000 m — Barsey produces one of the most vivid natural spectacles in the Eastern Himalayas when the forest blooms in late March and April. The main trek from Okhrey to Barsey Top (approximately 10 km, 4–5 hours) passes through progressively denser rhododendron forest. In October and November the forest turns autumn gold, and the Kanchenjunga views from the upper trail are excellent. Hilley village, 6 km from Okhrey, provides an alternative entry.

Why visit

Why go to Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary

24 rhododendron species in simultaneous bloom

The simultaneous bloom of 24 species — deep crimson Rhododendron arboreum to white R. griffithianum and butter-yellow R. wightii — creates a colour gradient across the hillside with no equivalent elsewhere in the Eastern Himalayas.

Kanchenjunga panorama from Barsey Top (3,500 m)

Above the treeline the trail opens onto a ridge with full Kanchenjunga views — the massif rising to 8,586 m above the valley below. On clear October mornings the view extends 60 km.

Blood Pheasant and Satyr Tragopan habitat

Barsey is one of the most important pheasant habitats in West Sikkim. Blood Pheasant, Satyr Tragopan and Himalayan Monal are all documented. The early morning Okhrey approach is one of the better pheasant-watching walks in the district.
