About Okhrey Village & Forest Walk

Okhrey is a small West Sikkim village at 2,100 m with a handful of good homestays and a way of life centred on cardamom cultivation and small-holder farming. The forest tracks around the village pass through dense temperate forest — oak, rhododendron and magnolia — with several natural viewpoint clearings looking toward the Kanchenjunga foothills. A gentle 2-hour loop from the village market loops back through the forest edge and the homestay cluster on the upper road. The walk is ideal for the afternoon of arrival — acclimatising to the altitude before the Barsey full-day trek the next morning.

Why go to Okhrey Village & Forest Walk

Large arborescent rhododendrons from the village

The rhododendron trees immediately above Okhrey reach 15–20 m tall. In March and April they are covered in deep red blooms at close range — the bloom without needing to go up to Barsey.

Cardamom cultivation at the forest edge

Okhrey farmers cultivate large cardamom under the forest canopy around the village edge. In September to October, fresh cardamom pods are being picked and dried — the smell of fresh cardamom in the village is pervasive.
