About Hilley Viewpoint

Hilley is a small village 6 km from Okhrey at 2,100 m, sitting on the West Sikkim ridge above the Barsey Sanctuary. The ridge at Hilley faces the full Kanchenjunga massif with nothing between you and the peaks — the Rangit valley lies 1,800 m below, and Kanchenjunga, Pandim, Kabru and Rathong rise 6,000 m above the valley floor. The sunrise here is among the cleanest in West Sikkim. Hilley also serves as the alternative entry to the Barsey Sanctuary, so a sunrise viewpoint stop can naturally extend into the rhododendron trek.

Why visit

Why go to Hilley Viewpoint

Full Kanchenjunga massif — unobstructed

From Hilley the entire western wall of the Kanchenjunga group fills the northern horizon: Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), Pandim (6,691 m), Kabru (7,353 m) and Rathong (6,679 m) in a single frame with no intermediate ridges.

Pink snowfields before dawn

The snowfields catch the first light 15 minutes before the sun clears the eastern horizon, turning pink and gold while the valley is still dark. Arrive by 5:30 am in winter.

Alternative entry to Barsey Sanctuary

The Barsey trail begins from Hilley as well as Okhrey. Starting from Hilley means you are already at 2,100 m and the rhododendron bloom levels are immediately accessible.

Time of dayArrive at the ridge by 5:30 am in winter, 6 am in spring. The snowfields glow pink 15 minutes before sunrise.

Practical notes

Things we always tell our guests about Hilley Viewpoint

  • Stay at one of the small Hilley guesthouses the night before — the walk from the guesthouse to the viewpoint is 5 minutes.
  • Carry a warm jacket — at 2,100 m the ridge is cold before sunrise year-round.
  • After the sunrise, the Barsey sanctuary trail starts immediately from Hilley. Combining both makes an excellent full-day plan.
Frequently asked

Hilley Viewpoint — your questions answered

Hilley is higher than Pelling's main viewpoints and faces the massif from a slightly different angle. Many photographers prefer Hilley for the combination of altitude, unobstructed foreground and the complete absence of other tourists. Pelling has better facilities; Hilley has the purer view.
