About Organic Farms & Cardamom Forest
Tinchuley and the surrounding ridge villages are certified organic farming communities — cardamom, ginger, turmeric, oranges and vegetables grown without chemicals on steep terraced slopes at 1,700–1,900m. Most Tinchuley homestays offer a farm walk and cooking experience as part of the stay: you walk through the cardamom forest on the shaded slopes below the ridge (large cardamom grows under a canopy of Himalayan alder — the combined smell of cardamom and forest damp is extraordinary), see the ginger and turmeric being processed, and then cook a meal with the same produce in the homestay kitchen. The cardamom forest walk in March–April, when the plants are flowering, is the most fragrant walk in the Darjeeling hills.
Why go to Organic Farms & Cardamom Forest
Walk through large-cardamom forest under Himalayan alder canopy
Large cardamom (Amomum subulatum) grows in the shaded understorey below the ridge. The forest — cardamom stalks 1m high, alder canopy above, the smell of the pods — is unusual and unforgettable in spring.
