About Rock Garden (Barbotey)
Rock Garden, officially called Barbotey Rock Garden, is 11km from Darjeeling town on the road toward Mirik — a terraced garden built along a steep hillside threaded through by a natural stream with small waterfalls. Constructed by the Gorkha Hill Council in 1992, it is primarily a local picnic destination rather than a tourist attraction — which is exactly why it can be pleasant. On weekdays it is quiet. The path winds up through terraced lawns, past the stream sections, and emerges at a viewpoint with a wide valley panorama. The waterfalls are modest outside monsoon season but the sound of running water throughout the garden makes it peaceful. Best used as a half-morning detour on the way to or from Mirik, rather than a standalone destination.
