About Himalayan Viewpoint

Tinchuley sits on a high ridge at 1,800m in the Darjeeling hills, 30km from Darjeeling town — a quiet farming village that faces north across the full Kanchenjunga massif. The view from the ridge above the village is one of the best in the Darjeeling district and, crucially, almost no one comes here. On a clear October or November morning from the wooden bench at the viewpoint, you can see Kanchenjunga (8,586m), Pandim, Kabru, Rathong and the Singalila ridge all together — the same mountain panorama that Tiger Hill offers, with the difference that you are the only person looking at it. Tinchuley is primarily a homestay destination — guests stay 2–3 nights and walk the ridgeline, the tea estate edge and the organic farm paths. The view is always there in the background, and on the clearest mornings it dominates everything.

Why visit

Why go to Himalayan Viewpoint

Undisturbed 180° Kanchenjunga view with no crowds

Same mountain range as Tiger Hill. Different in every other way — no entrance fee, no tourist infrastructure, no other visitors on a weekday morning. Just the bench and the mountain.

Organic ridge farming — cardamom, ginger and oranges on the path to the viewpoint

Tinchuley is a certified organic farming community. The ridge path to the viewpoint passes through cardamom plots, orange orchards and ginger terraces at 1,800m — the farming landscape is itself interesting, with the mountain always in the background.

Practical notes

Things we always tell our guests about Himalayan Viewpoint

  • The viewpoint is most rewarding as part of a 2-night homestay — the mountain view improves with altitude acclimatisation and you will want to watch it over multiple mornings.
  • Ask your homestay host for the best current ridge path for the viewpoint — the exact point moves slightly with season.
  • Carry a warm jacket even in October — at 1,800m the ridge is significantly cooler than Darjeeling town, and the pre-dawn viewpoint can be 4–6°C in October–November.

Possible but not ideal — the 1.5-hour drive each way means you arrive at midday when views are typically cloudy. For the mountain view, an overnight stay is the right approach.
