About Padmaja Naidu Zoo
The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park at 2,134m is the highest zoo in India and the only zoo in the world specifically dedicated to conserving high-altitude Himalayan fauna. It houses one of the world's most successful breeding programmes for the Snow Leopard — currently the largest captive snow leopard population on earth. The Red Panda breeding programme began here in 1986 and has contributed significantly to the species' wild population. Other residents include the endangered Tibetan wolf, Himalayan black bear, clouded leopard, barking deer and the Asian black bear. The zoo's altitude means many animals can be seen in relatively natural active states rather than lethargically pacing tropical enclosures.
