About Jorebunglow & Sukhiapokhri

Jorebunglow and Sukhiapokhri are two adjacent small towns 14km from Darjeeling on the main road toward Sandakphu, sitting on the ridge at around 1,820m. They are rarely listed as primary destinations, which is part of their appeal — the view of the Singalila Range from the ridge here is the same panorama that Tiger Hill charges admission for, but with none of the crowds and all the charm of ordinary Darjeeling hill life going about its morning business. On a clear October morning from the main square at Sukhiapokhri, you can see Kanchenjunga, Kabru, Rathong and the Singalila ridge in one sweep. The towns are also the natural starting point for the Tonglu day hike (6km up to 3,070m) and the trailhead for the Mirik Valley walk — short, easy and consistently underrated.

Why visit

Why go to Jorebunglow & Sukhiapokhri

Singalila ridge panorama without the crowds

The same mountain range as Tiger Hill, from a ridge 14km out of Darjeeling, with local tea shops instead of tourist facilities. Come for the view, stay for the relative peace.

Tonglu and Tumling trailhead — best Everest views in the Darjeeling hills

The trail to Tonglu (3,070m) and Tumling starts from near Sukhiapokhri and is the route with the most direct Everest view in the entire Darjeeling district. The 4–5 hour walk to Tonglu on a clear October morning shows Everest, Makalu and Kanchenjunga simultaneously on the same horizon.

When to go

Best time to visit Jorebunglow & Sukhiapokhri

October to April for the Everest and Kanchenjunga views that make Tonglu worth the walk. October and November are the clearest months after the monsoon — the probability of seeing Everest from Tonglu is highest in this window. March and April are good for the rhododendron forest on the lower trail. Monsoon (June–September) produces cloud-covered views from both Sukhiapokhri and Tonglu; the trail to Tonglu becomes muddy above 2,500m.

Time of day7–9am on clear mornings.

Practical notes

Things we always tell our guests about Jorebunglow & Sukhiapokhri

  • Combine with a Tonglu day hike if you have a full day — the trailhead is here and the ridge summit takes about 3 hours.
  • Local tea shops on the main square serve excellent ginger tea and thukpa.
  • The Sukhiapokhri market is a good last fuel and provision stop before the Singalila Ridge trek — stock up on snacks, batteries and local sim cards here before heading to Tonglu and beyond.
